Biola Picks Up First Win, Beating Marymount 2-0

Seniors Barr and Cabuling tally goals for the Eagles

Brittany Barr
Box Score LA MIRADA, Calif. --- Senior Brittany Barr scored eight minutes in and fellow senior Katie Cabuling capped off the contest with a goal in the 88th minute as Biola recorded a 2-0 win over Marymount College in a non-conference match on Tuesday night at Al Barbour Field.

The Eagles pick up their first win of the season, improving to 1-2-0 overall while handing the Mariners their third straight loss to drop them to 1-3-0.

Biola's seniors bookended what turned out to be a defensive battle through much of the contest.

Barr wasted little time tallying the first goal of the season for the Eagles. Junior Chrissy King fed a nice pass through the Marymount defense to the feet of Barr who went one-on-one with the keeper. The Marymount net minder charged the ball, sliding with her feet in an attempt to kick it away. However, it tipped off Barr, off the keeper and landed back at Barr's feet. The senior then walked it into the empty goal to put the Eagles up 1-0 early.

The remainder of the first half turned into a midfield battle with six shots put on frame by the Eagles and one by the Mariners.

In the second half the Eagles came out strong and peppered the Marymount net with 13 shots. Biola had most of its chances early in the half, but could not find the insurance goal.

The tide then shifted with about 20 minutes remaining as the Mariners pushed forward in a last-ditch attempt to find the tying goal. But the Mariners had trouble getting anything on frame as all three shot attempts over the final 12 minutes missed the mark.

The Eagles would finally tally its all-important insurance goal in the 88th minute. Biola had a few counter-attack chances fall short in the prior few minutes, but had a great chance with four minutes left. As the Eagles pressed forward, a lofted ball to the top of the box landed at the feet of a Biola attacker, who was undercut by a Marymount defender, which gave the Eagles a free kick just outside of the box. Cabuling then sent the free kick around the wall and Marymount goalkeeper Morgan Faulkner attempted a diving save. However, she was only able to get her finger tips on it and it rolled off the post and over the line before she could recover.

Marymount had its best chance of the match just a few seconds after the goal on nearly an identical foul called on Biola just outside of the Eagles net. However, the shot attempt by Sofia Ferrelli missed the net just wide.

Biola would respond with yet another counter attack as junior Jessica Austin made a few nifty moves to break into the open field. Faulkner charged off her line as Austin approached the box so she slid the ball to the near side to a wide open Stephanie Cubias, who fired toward the open goal. But out of no where a Marymount defender flew in a blocked the shot to save a goal.

"In the last few games we really struggled to get the ball into the net," said Biola Head Coach Todd Elkins. "But tonight they really ratcheted up their attack and it resulted in a pair of big goals for us.

Sophomore goalkeeper Briana Williams recorded her first shutout of the season for the Eagles along with her first Biola victory.

The Eagles hope to build off the momentum of their first win on Saturday, hosting Pomona-Pitzer College in a non-conference contest at 7:00 p.m. at Al Barbour Field.
