Eagles Rally for 3-3 Draw at No. 12 Cal State San Marcos

Biola overcomes 3-1 halftime deficit to earn tie

Stephanie Cubias
Box Score SAN MARCOS, Calif. --- Biola scored two second-half goals including a game-tying goal by Stephanie Cubias in the 77th minute to earn a hard-fought 3-3 tie on the road against No. 12 Cal State San Marcos in a non-conference match at the Multipurpose Field in San Marcos on Tuesday night.

The Eagles improve to 2-2-1 on the season and are now undefeated in their last three matches while the Cougars stand at 3-1-1 overall.

Biola overcame a flat start which saw Cal State San Marcos score two goals in the first 11 minutes including one under a minute into the contest. The Cougars got on the board early with a nice goal on a goal by Shelby Bush 59 seconds into the contest. They added a second in the 11th minute as Bush assisted on a goal by Sarah Hopper which put Biola in a 2-0 hole early on.

Instead of packing it in for the night, the Eagles pressed forward and kept the pressure on the Cougars. The pressure culminated in a goal by junior Jessica Austin, who finished a breakaway chance off a great through ball by senior Katie Cabuling in the 30th minute.

However, Cal State San Marcos got another five minutes before the half on a goal by Dani Porter and took a 3-1 lead into the break.

Biola came our strong in the second half and pulled back to within one in the 60th minute. Pressure by the Eagles led to an attempted clearance by a pair of CSUSM defenders. However, the ball skipped off the head of one and landed right at the feet of Chrissy King, who scored with a quick shot to the far post.

The Eagles would net the equalizer in the 77th minute, taking advantage of another lucky bounce. The Cougars' goalkeeper attempted a clearance under heavy pressure by Biola, but had the ball defelect right to Cubias along the end line on the left side of the goal. She calmly gathered the ball and blasted it from the tough angle just inside the far post to bring the match level.

Both teams had a number of chances as regulation wound down including a great chance by Austin with under a minute to go. Austin settled a ball just outside of the box and blasted a shot toward goal only to have it deflect off a defender and out for a corner. The corner attempted during the countdown did not result in a good chance for the Eagles.

Due to the late start after the men's game, the teams were unable to play the overtime period due to darkness and settled for the 3-3 draw.

Briana Williams made four saves in goal for the Eagles while Amanda Sears recorded two across the pitch.

The Eagles hope to ride the momentum of the big road point into their next match, a home game against undefeated and 24th-ranked Carroll College (Mont.) on Friday night. Kick-off is slated for 7:00 p.m.
