LA MIRADA, Calif. --- For the fourth-straight season, Biola University has been among the leaders in the NAIA in teams receiving Scholar Team recognition as 14 of 17 sports earned the honor with a team GPA of 3.0 or better.
The NAIA recognized 741 teams from across the NAIA with a 3.0 GPA or better on a 4.0 scale. The team GPA must include all varsity student-athletes certified as eligible. (Indoor Track and Field were combined with outdoor track and field this year).
Biola was again one of the top programs in the country with 14 teams earning honors. Concordia (Neb.) and Hastings (Neb.) tied for the top spot with 16 teams being recognized. Biola led the NAIA the last two years with 16 teams earning scholar-team honors.
The women's cross country team was once again one of the leaders in the classroom, posting the highest team GPA at Biola at 3.66. That up from a 3.59 team GPA the year before. The women's track and field team was close behind at 3.57 with Men's Tennis posting a 3.54 team GPA. Volleyball rounded out the top four with a 3.50 team GPA.
Once again, Biola led the GSAC in NAIA Scholar Teams with Azusa Pacific University and Vanguard University each recording 10 teams. Point Loma Nazarene University also had eight.
Oklahoma City University women's track team was named the 2011-12 NAIA Scholar-Team of the Year. The Lady Stars finished in the top spot with a 4.07 cumulative grade-point average during the 2011-12 academic year. Joining Oklahoma City to round out the top five award winners were: Vanguard (Calif.) women's cross country (3.97); Lee University (Tenn.) women's golf (3.96); Oklahoma City women's cross country (3.91); and Shorter (Ga.) women's golf (3.83).
