TOWSON, Md. --- Biola swimmers Nathan Roe, Chris Stutzman and Rachael Sirjord have been named to the 2012 Capital One Academic All-America® College Division men's and women's at-large teams, as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) and announced on Monday.

The Capital One College Division Academic All-America® men's and women's at-large teams are comprised of student-athletes from NAIA, Canadian and two-year institutions and recognizes the nation's top student-athletes for their combined performances athletically and academically. 

The at-large program for the Capital One Academic All-America® program includes the sports of fencing, golf, gymnastics, ice hockey, lacrosse, rifle, skiing, swimming and diving, tennis, water polo  for both men and women; bowling, crew and field hockey for women; and volleyball and wrestling for men.

Sirjord, a senior from Deephaven, Minn., was Biola's lone representative on the women's at-large team after posting a 3.78 GPA in her pursuit of a degree in Biblical Studies. She is returning to Biola in the fall to begin work on a Master's of Arts in New Testament at Talbot School of Theology. 

In the pool, Sirjord capped a solid career at Biola with three Top 40 finishes at the NAIA National Championships in March. She placed 17th in the 100 fly, 27th in the 50 free and 38th in the 100 free. 

Roe, a senior from Huntington Beach, had a 3.36 GPA while working toward a Biblical Studies major at Biola. He was joined on the men's at-large team by junior Chris Stutzman, who finished with a 3.41 GPA in Cinema/Media Arts. Roe and Stutzman were solid contributors in the pool to help the Biola men's team to its best season in program history.

Stutzman is the school record holder in the freestyle sprint events, finishing fifth in the 100 free, seventh in the 50 free and 11th in the 200 free at the 2012 NAIA National Championships in March. Roe placed 12th in the 200 free, and placed 24th in both the 100 free and 500 free. Both were on all five relay teams which placed in the Top 8.

The trio runs Biola's total Academic All-American® total honorees to 11 and they are the first three swimmers to earn Academic All-America® honors. The Eagles have had a total of five athletes named to their respective Academic All-American® teams this season. 

To be eligible for Academic All-America® consideration, a student-athlete must be a varsity starter or key reserve, maintain a cumulative G.P.A. of 3.30 on a scale of 4.00, have reached sophomore athletic and academic standings at his/her current institution and be nominated by his/her sports information director. 

Since the program's inception in 1952, CoSIDA has bestowed Academic All-America honors on more than 14,000 student-athletes in Divisions I, II, III and NAIA, covering all NCAA championship sports.
