Drake Fages put the game out of reach as Biola cruised to a 10-6 win over Point Loma Nazarene in the second game of a GSAC series on Friday afternoon.
The Eagles improve to 21-23 with the win and to 14-12 in GSAC play, sliding ahead of The Master's College and into third place in the conference standings. The Sea Lions fall to 16-27 and are now 8-18 in GSAC.
Both teams managed to score early and often in the contest with Pt. Loma holding a 5-3 lead after three innings. Biola would fight back in the fifth, tying the game on Sutherland's two run shot and taking the lead on a groundout later in the frame. The Eagles then blew the game open with four runs in the ninth--three of them coming on one swing of Fages' bat to cap the scoring.
Biola starter Jeff Grijalva got off to a shaky start in the game, going just 2-1/3 innings and allowing five runs on nine hits. But the bullpen did a fantastic job of bailing him out.
Erick Allen, Karl Stuck and J.T. Mickelson combined to scatter six hits and allow one unearned run over the final 6-2/3 innings to allow the offense a chance to recover. Allen would earn the win to improve to 4-2 with Mickelson picking up his second save in as many days to give him four on the year.
Biola opened with a run in the first on a clutch two-out double by Fages to drive in Sutherland, who led of the game with a walk.
Point Loma answered back in the bottom of the first with a run as Grijalva hit the first batter, walked the third and allowed a run-scoring single to Bryan Burkhead.
Biola went back up by one in the second on a solo homer by Michael Annunziata but allowed a run in the bottom of the frame to once again tie the game.
The Eagles would record an unearned run in the third to go back up by one, but Point Loma responded with a three-spot in the bottom of the frame. Ricky Gingras led off the frame with a solo home run. That was followed by a pair of singles, a ground out and another single, which chased Grijalva from the game.
Allen came on and--after allowing an RBI-single--got a caught stealing and strikeout to end the inning.
Biola took back the lead for good in the fifth. Paul Slater led off the inning with a single and Sutherland brought him in with a two-run home run to tie the game at 5-5. Johnny Farrington followed with a walk and Vinnie Fayard moved him to third with a double to right center. After an intentional walk to Fages, Nick Covyeau would ground into a double play, though Farrington would come around to score and give Biola a 6-5 lead.
The score would remain that way as Biola pitchers allowed just two hits and three baserunners over the next four innings. The Eagles would then break the game open with a four-run ninth.
With one out, pinch hitter Sage Poland was hit by a pitch to start the rally. Sutherland then doubled to put two in scoring position. An RBI-groundout by Farrington brought home one run to make it 7-5. After Fayard was hit by a pitch, Fages followed with his second ninth-inning home run in as many games, a three-run bomb to right field to make it 10-5.
The Sea Lions would score one unearned run in the bottom of the ninth to pull within four, but Mickelson would work out of another jam to secure the win.
Sutherland went 3-for-4 in the game and was a triple short of the cycle, scoring four runs and driving home two. Fages collected two hits in four at-bats, driving in four runs in the game.
Biola was out-hit 15-10 in the game, but did out-hit Point Loma 6-4 over the final five innings.
The two teams close out the four-game series on Saturday with a doubleheader at Biola beginning at 12:00 p.m.
