LA MIRADA, Calif. --- Biola starter Jeff Grijalva threw the first complete game of the year and Biola recorded nine two-out hits en route to an 8-2 win over Vanguard in the first game of a GSAC series on Thursday afternoon on Eagles Diamond.

The Eagles snap a short losing streak and improve to 10-12 on the season and to 4-5 in conference play while the Lions drop to 8-7 and to 0-5 in the GSAC.

Grijalva was outstanding in the game, allowing just two runs on five hits in the complete-game effort, picking up his third win in his last four starts. He would throw just 116 pitches in the game includign a pair of six-pitch innings early in the contest, finishing with five strikeouts as well.

Grijalva got into a bit of a jam in the top of the first as he walked two batters and hit another, though one of the walks was erased on a caught stealing. However, he got a pair of popouts to end the threat. From there he went to work, allowing just one hit over the next four innings.

Meanwhile, the offense got started in the bottom of the second with the first of many two-out rallies. With two on and two out, Benji Sutherland drove home the first run with a single to make it 1-0.

The Eagles would add two more in the fourth as Sutherland started the rally with a two-out single which was followed by walk to Dustin Williams. Vinnie Fayard then followed with a triple to drive home the pair and extend the lead to 3-0 after four.

Vanguard recorded its first run of the game on its second hit as David Kiriakos hit a solo home run to close the gap to 3-1.

But Biola answered right back with a three-spot in the bottom of the inning. After loading the bases with no one out, the Eagles scored a rare run with less than two out as Williams hit a sacrifice fly to make it 4-1. The Lions would get the second out of the inning but Nick Covyeau and Mac Sullivan each followed with RBI-singles to give Biola a 6-1 lead heading into the seventh.

Biola added a pair of insurance runs in the bottom of the eighth inning with another two-out hit as Michael Annunziata drove home two runs with a single.

Grijalva came back out in the ninth inning and got into a bit of trouble early in the inning, allowing a leadoff single and a one-out double to make it an 8-2 contest. But he would work out of the inning with a fly out and ground out to end the game.

Every Biola player recorded at least one with the exception of Williams, who drove in a run and scored another, reaching base twice via walks. Annunziata, Covyeau and Sutherland each led the way with two hits.

The second game of the four-game series is on Friday afternoon back at Eagles Diamond. First pitch is scheduled for 2:00 p.m.
