Eagles' Late Comeback Falls Short in Quarterfinal Loss to Oklahoma Baptist

Davey Hopkins
KANSAS CITY, Mo. --- Biola overcame a 21-point, second-half deficit to pull back within five points, but could not complete the comeback, falling to No. 2 Oklahoma Baptist University 67-56 in the quarterfinals of teh 2012 NAIA Division I National Championships Tournament at the Municipal Auditorium in Kansas City on Saturday night.

The Eagles wrap up the season with a 27-9 record while the Bison move on the semifinals with a 31-4.

Biola's lone senior Davey Hopkins wrapped up an impressive final five games of his career, leading the team with 18 points and seven rebounds. Hopkins, who scored a career-high 31 points on Friday night, scored 98 points over his final five collegiate games.

Given Kalipinde scored 13 points and added nine rebounds and two assists while Zack Zaragoza came off the bench to score nine points and seven rebounds.

"We ran into a very good defensive team," said Head Coach Dave Holmquist. "We didn't seem to have our legs tonight. Last night was a great win ut took a lot out of us."

The Eagles got off to a poor start in the game, falling behind by 13 midway through the first half and trailing 33-19 at halftime. The Ealges shot just 26% in the first half--the second-lowest total in a half this season (20% in second half at The Master's on Dec. 6).

In the second half, Biola was able to close the gap to 10 with a three-point play by Hopkins to make it 36-26 with 17:17 to play. But the Bison went on a 15-4 run over the next three minutes to take its largest lead of the game at 51-30 with 14:01 remaining in the contest.

But the Eagles had one final gasp in them. Biola then mounted an impressive 21-5 run over the next eight minutes, cutting the lead to five at 56-51 on a second-chance bucket by Hopkins with 3:15 left. But Biola could get no closer.

The Bison once again clamped down on defense, thwarting the next two Biola attempts to cut the deficit down even more and hit free throws on the other end to end the Eagles' run.

Biola shot 40%% in the second half while OBU connected on 37.9%. Overall, the Eagles hit just 34.5% from the field to the Bison's 42.4%.

Sonner Athletic Conference Co-Player of the Year Emmanuel Wilson scored a game-high 20 points while Jacobi Isham added 14 points and six assists.

"I was glad we had a lenghty stretch where we could make some things happen," said Coach Holmquist. "We just couldn't score or get much going through much of the first half. We had momentum there late in the second half, but just couldn't come all the way back in the end."

The loss snaps Biola's 10-game winning streak, though the Eagles finish the season with 15 wins over their final 17 games.

"We accomplished some very good things including getting back to the quarterfinals for the third-straight year," said Holmquist. "We had great games and a lot of close wins late after losing some close games early. Overall it was a great season for us."
