Box Score KANSAS CITY, Mo. --- In a clash featuring the top offense in the NAIA against one of the top defenses in the country, it was the defense that eventually won out as No. 10 Biola earned its third-straight quarterfinal berth with a thrilling 94-90 overtime victory over No. 7 Our Lady of the Lake University (Texas) in a second-round matchup a the 2012 NAIA Division I Men's Basketball National Championships on Friday.
The Eagles pick up their 10th-straight win and 15th in their last 16 games, improving to 27-8 on the season. Biola advances to the NAIA Quarterfinals for the third-straight season, facing No. 2 Oklahoma Baptist University on Saturday at 6:00 p.m. CT (4:00 p.m. PT).
Biola trailed by as many as 10 points in the second half and overcame a seven-point deficit with 3:07 to go in the game with Davey Hopkins hitting a pair of free throws with six seconds left to tie the game at 84-84 and force overtime. Hopkins, who finished with a career-high 31 points, scored six of the team's 10 points in the extra session to lead Biola to the victory.
“That was a wonderful win for us," said Head Coach Dave Holmquist. "I have coaches so many games over my 35 years of coaching I've forgotten a lot of them. But this has to be one of the 10 games I have enjoyed the most.”
The Eagles' proved defense rules at the NAIA National Tournament, clamping down and holding the nation's highest-scoring team to 90 points and just 84 in regulation. The high-pressure, full-court defensive style of the Saints didn't seem to cause much of a problem for Biola which routinely broke the full-court press and committed just 15 turnovers in the contest--well below OLLU's opponent average of 28.5 per game.
Hopkins was the key to the win for Biola, finishing with a double-double with 31 points and 10 rebounds, hitting 11-of-17 from the field and 9-of-12 from the free throw line. He also added six assists in 43 minutes played.
Chase Adams contributed 19 points while Kaimarr Price overcame early foul trouble to finish with 17 points and eight rebounds.
Biola seemed down and out late in the contest, trailing by 10 with 7:11 to go. It appeared as though the Saints' high-pressure defense was starting to wear out the Eagles. However, Biola had one last run in the reserve.
Hopkins started a short run with a pair of free throws and Zack Zaragoza followed one minute later with a three-pointer to cut the lead to five at 77-72. A defensive stand later, Price hit a tough jumper in the paint to cut the lead to three.
The Saints answered back with a three-pointer and after a Price bucket, converted a three-point play to stretch the lead back to seven at 83-76 with 3:08 to go. After a defensive stand, Biola got a second-chance bucket by Price to cut the lead to five. Price then forced a turnover on the other end and Zaragoza made an easy layup on the other end to make it an 83-80 game. Biola benefitted from another miscue by the Saints and after a miss by Hopkins, Adams cleaned up the board and got the put back to make it a one-point game with 1:00 left.
Our Lady of the Lake ran the clock down and fired up a three-pointer which was missed and rebounded by Hopkins. But a highly-questionable foul call on the other end against Hopkins put the Saints on the line for a pair of free throws. Arthur Govan hit the first of two free throws but missed the second and Biola called a timeout to set up a final play.
Out of the timeout, Hopkins drove into the lane shadowed by Govan, who was whistled for a foul with six seconds left. Hopkins, in the pressure situation, easily drained both free throws to tie the game. The Saints would come down the other way but failed to get off a shot before the final buzzer.
In the overtime session, Biola scored the first six points over the opening two minutes, jumping out to a 90-84 lead. The Saints slowly cut the lead down to two with one minute left but Hopkins hit another pair of big free throws to make it a four-point game. Our Lady of the Lake had three looks at wide open three-pointers on the next possession, but Hopkins was able to secure the rebound and Kaimarr Price hit two more free throws to seal the deal.
“Our effort and the way we came from behind was fantastic," said Holmquist. "The team never gave up and gave a great effort. We slowed them down a little bit near the end but it still felt like the pace was fast throughout. We just made the plays we needed to at the end to pull it out.”
Biola had the better of play in the first half, using a 15-4 run to take a 30-22 lead with 5:36 to go in the period. Biola still led by six at 38-32 with 2:12 to go on a three-pointer by Adams, but the Saints battled back and closed the half on a 10-2 run to take a 42-40 lead to the break.
Biola shot an impressive 49.3% including a 51.5% clip in the second half and overtime periods. The Eagles were out-rebounded by the Saints 46-41 with OLLU recording 23 offensive rebounds in the game.
The offensive rebounds combined with 10-of-38 shooting from three-point range kept the Saints in the contest through much of the game. But OLLU went 0-for-5 from three-point range in overtime and missed its final five in regulation as well.
Andre Murillo scored 12 points for the Eagles with Zaragoza adding 11 points and five rebounds.
Marco Cooper led the Saints with 19 points and 10 rebounds with Ricardo Zanini contributing 17 points.
