LA MIRADA, Calif. --- Biola's high-powered offense was held to just three runs over 16 innings, suffering a non-conference doubleheader sweep at the hands of Cal State San Marcos on Friday afternoon, losing 10-2 in the opener and 3-1 in the second game.
The Eagles drop to to 13-16 on the season with the loss while the Cougars to 14-11.
Biola had a rough go of things offensively, recording just three runs despite 16 hits over the two-game span.
In the first game, the Eagles fell behind early, allowing a run in the top of the second. Biola got that run back in a big was as
Drake Fages hit his first home run of the season, blasting a shot to left to tie the game.
However, the Cougars answered back with two run in the top of the third, then added three more in the fifth to go up 6-1. After scoring another run in the seventh, Biola closed to within in one with a solo home run by
Wesley Cottier but could get no closer the rest of the way.
Nick Turner suffered the loss, allowing six runs on eight hits over five innings.
In the second game, the Eagles again fell behind early, allowing a first-inning solo home run. Biola would get the run back and tie the game up with a run in the bottom of the second on another home run by Cottier in the second. Later that inning, the Eagles would put runners at second and third with one out for the top of the order, but a shallow fly out and a ground out ended the threat.
The Cougars would score the go-ahead run in the fifth on a sacrifice fly and tacked on an insurance run in the seventh on another sacrifice fly to make it 3-1. Biola couldn't get a runner past second base over the final three innings as Cal State San Marcos held on for the win.
Javier Martinez put together another strong start, allowing just two runs on four hits over five innings, but suffered the loss.
Biola returns to GSAC play next week, traveling to The Master's College for the first two games of a four-game GSAC series. The first two games are Thursday and Friday in Santa Clarita with the Eagles hosting the Mustangs in a doubleheader next Saturday.
