LA MIRADA, Calif. --- Biola wrapped up its first doubleheader of the 2012 season with a split against the University of La Verne on Saturday, winning 4-1 in the night cap after falling 7-6 in 10 innings in the opener.

The Eagles move to 2-1 on the season with the split while the Leopards open the year at 1-1.

Biola pitcher Chris Baek shook off some opening-day rust, picking up the win in game two with six solid innings. Baek, who was making his first start since early 2010 after undergoing Tommy John surgery, allowed just one run on five hits over six innings while striking out seven in his debut. The run in the first came after a pair of hits and an error. However, he struck out two of the last three batters to end the threat.

Meanwhile, the Eagles added some much needed offense to help support their starter. In the second, Biola tied the score on an RBI groundout by Sage Poland after Nick Coyveau doubled and Wesley Cottier singled to open the inning.

The Eagles scored again in the third as Michael Annunziata tripled and came home on a ground out by Johnny Farrington.

After adding an unearned run in the fourth, Vinnie Fayard drove home the final run of the day with a two-out double to center, plating Benji Sutherland with the fourth run of the game.

Javier Martinez closed out the game to earn the save, allowing two singles but striking out the side.

Biola rallied back from a pair of late deficits in the first game, including scoring two with two out in the ninth to tie the game and force extra innings. However, the Eagles could not work the magic one more time in the 10th in the loss.

Biola got on the board first with a run in the second as Nick Covyeau led off the second with a solo shot to left.

La Verne batted around and scored three times in the top of the fourth, but Covyeau led off the bottom of the frame with his second homer of the afternoon to cut the lead to 3-2.

The Eagles would then tie the game via an unearned run in the fifth, scoring a run on a fielding error by the Leopards.

The game would remain tied until the eighth as a wild finish ensued. La Verne got a clutch, two-out single to go up 4-3. Biola answered back with a run in the bottom of the frame as Mike Lopez recorded a pinch-hit ground out to tie the game.

La Verne looked to take the lead for good in the ninth with another big clutch hit as Jason Moralez drove in two with a two-out single.

However, down to their final out, the Eagles rallied. Covyeau led off the frame with a single and came around to score on a double to center by Wesley Cottier. Sage Poland then sent a double down the left field line to tie the game and force extras.

La Verne scored again, getting the leadoff man on base for the eighth-straight inning, this time via a triple by shortstop George Hanna. He came around to score on a single and the Leopards again looked to hold onto a lead and close out the game.

Despite a one-out hit, the Eagles were unable to push across another run and suffered the tough 7-6 loss.

Jeff Grijalva, who like Baek, hasn't pitched since early in the 2010 season after undergoing Tommy John surgery, did not factor in the decision, allowing three runs--two earned--over five innings. He walked four and struck out three.

J.T. Mickelson suffered the hard-luck loss, allowing the run in the 10th.

Covyeau finished the day going 4-for-8 with two home runs, a double, two RBIs and three runs scored. Six other Biola players also recorded two hits each in the doubleheader.

The Eagles return to the field on Tuesday, hosting Cal State LA in a non-conference game at Eagles Diamond. First pitch is slated for 2:00 p.m.
