PASADENA, Calif. --- Biola got the 2012 season off to a good start on Friday, defeating Cal Tech 7-2 in a non-conference match at the Braun Tennis Courts in Pasadena.

The Eagles got the match off to a good start by winning two of three doubles matches. Biola's Anthony Sena and Isaiah Pekary picked up the first point with an 8-0 win at No. 2 doubles followed closely thereafter by an 8-2 win at No. 3 by Colby Gilmore and Brent Worthington. The No. 1 doubles team of Thomas Coibion and David Mossman came close to sweeping doubles for the Eagles, but suffered a tough 8-6 loss.

Singles play was nearly all Biola as the Eagles won the first five matches to seal up the victory. Weston Leopold, who was Biola's first All-GSAC selection since the team reinstated in 2007 when he won the honor last year, won his first match of the season, a 6-4, 6-4 win over Devashish Joshi at No. 1.

David Mossman scored a 6-2, 6-0 victory at No. 2 singles with Isaiah Pekary (No. 4 singles) and Anthony Sena (No. 5 singles) each pulling off victories while only dropping one game. Brent Worthington earned a hard-fought victory at No. 3 singles winning 6-0, losing 6-2 then winning the tiebreaker 10-8. The same could not be said for Chris Evans, who won 6-0, lost 7-5 and then dropped the tiebreaker 10-3.

The Eagles return to action on Tuesday, traveling to Vanguard University to open GSAC play with a 2:00 p.m. match. BIola then returns home on Thursday, Feb. 16 for its home-opener against Fresno Pacific University at 2:00 p.m.
