Zaragoza Leads Biola Past Menlo in Season Opener

Zack Zaragoza
Box Score LA MIRADA, Calif. --- Zack Zaragoza scored 20 of his game-high 22 points in the second half, adding nine rebounds and connecting on four of Biola's six three-pointers to lead the Eagles to a 74-63 win over Menlo College in Biola's season opener on Saturday.

The Eagles open the season with a win while dropping the Oaks to 0-2 on the young season.

Zaragoza and Biola overcame a poor first half effort by hitting 69.6% from the field in the second half and fighting off a late rally by the Oaks, scoring the final 12 points of the game for the win.

The Oaks got the drop on Biola, hitting back-to-back three-pointers to set the tone and open the game with a 6-3 lead. They would stretch that lead to as many as 10 at 27-17 as the Eagles struggled to get much going offensively. Biola would close the gap to five at the break, trailing just 29-24 despite hitting just over 31% from the field through the first 20 minutes.

After Menlo opened the second half with a quick bucket, Biola came alive, using a 19-4 run over the next six minutes to take a commanding 43-34 lead.

But the Oaks pulled right back into the contest on back-to-back three-pointers by ChaRunn Jones to make it a 43-40 game with 12:24 left.

Biola held a slight lead down the stretch until a three-pointer by Charles Barnes gave Menlo a 61-59 lead with 4:06 to play. Zaragoza took over from the point, connecting on a three-pointer with 3:18 left to give the lead back to the Eagles.

The Oaks answered back again with a put-back bucket by Malik Dunbar with 2:20 left to take a 63-62 lead. However, that would be the final points Menlo would score. On the next possession, Zaragoza was fouled and drained two free throws to give Biola the lead back with 2:00 to play.

After a missed three-point attempt by the Oaks, Zaragoza was fouled hitting a jumper in the lane, converting the free throw for the three-point play to put Biola up 67-63. That would be all the Eagles would need as they hit free throws down the stretch for the win.

Three other Eagles scored in double-figures led by 12 points each from newcomers Jamie Ball and Christopher Jones. Dakota Anderson contributed 11 points.

Jones led the Oaks with 18 points including making five buckets from three-point range. Barnes added 14 on 4-of-8 shooting from beyond the arc.

Biola returns to action on Friday, hosting Simpson University in a non-conference game at a special start time of 3:30 p.m.
