Eagles Can't Pull Upset, Fall 1-0 to No. 15 Cal State San Marcos

Erin Frushon

LA MIRADA, Calif. --- Despite a solid defensive effort and a number of promising scoring chances, Biola was unable to pull off the upset against No. 15 Cal State San Marcos as Arielle Cohen scored the match's lone goal in the 54th minute in a non-conference match on Tuesday night at Al Barbour Field.

The Eagles (0-2-0) suffered their second-straight one-goal loss to start the season, but not for a lack of efffort. Biola took eight shots in the contest, putting five on goal and creating a number of scoring chances against one of the top teams on the West Coast.

However, the Cougars (2-0-0) were able to pull out the victory thanks to the Cohen goal just eight minutes into the second half. Biola was whistled for just three fouls in the match, but this one was called just outside of the box. Cohen took the free kick and found the lower right corner with a blast from about 23 yards out for the lone goal of the contest.

Biola even split its eight shots between the two halves and had two great chances late in the contest including a chance by Miranda Starbeck in the closing seconds that was saved by CSUSM's Kaycee Gunion. Gunion was solid in goal, making five saves to earn the cleansheet. Erin Frushon suffered another tough loss despite making seven saves and facing 14 shots.

The Eagles look to get back on the winning side this weekend, traveling to Salt Lake City for a pair of non-conference matches. On Friday, Biola faces Westminster College (Utah) then takes on the University of Great Falls (Mont.) on Saturday.
