Biola Season Ends With Loss to Oklahoma Baptist in Opening Round Championship

Michael Andrews

JOLIET, Ill. --- Biola's impressive season came to an end on Monday as the Eagles lost 13-1 to top-seeded Oklahoma Baptist University in the championship game of the 2011 NAIA National Championship Opening Round - Joliet Bracket.

Biola ends its season at 38-22 after the loss while the Bison improve to 45-12 and move on to the NAIA World Series next week.

The game was completed on Monday after being suspended due to rain on Saturday. When it was resumed, Biola had runners at first and second with one out in the bottom of the second, trailing 2-0. The Eagles quickly turned that into a bases-loaded situation as Garrett Leon singled on the first pitch he saw. But Biola was unable cash in on the opportunity and still trailed 2-0 after two.

Nick Turner, who pitched the first game of the Opening Round tournament on Thursday, came on in relief of starter Bobby O'Neill who pitched the first inning on Saturday and was being saved for a potential second game on Monday.

Things were going well for Turner through his first two innings pitched, allowed just one run to the hard-hitting Bison and working out of a pair of jams to keep the game close at 3-0.

However, things fell apart in the fifth as Oklahoma Baptist broke the game open with seven runs--all with two outs--something Biola did in its previous game against the University of Saint Francis. With two out and two on, Brenden Davis singled to left to drive home the first run of the frame. Then things went from bad to worse as Daniel Baptista lined a shot off Turner's shoulder, ricocheting off the pitcher and bouncing into the Oklahoma Baptist dugout.

It went for a double and plated another run and put to more in scoring position. The Eagles were then forced to bring in their scheduled second pitcher, Kevin Ryan. Ryan, who started Friday against the Bison, rushed through a warm-up and went back up on the hill in relief. However, after a walk, the Bison followed with three-straight hits and when all was said and done, Oklahoma Baptist had scored seven runs in the inning.

Biola got on the board in the bottom of the fifth as Benji Sutherland double to right and came around to score on a single by Michael Andrews

But the Bison continued to tack on runs, scoring one in the sixth and two in the seventh and cruised to the win.

Bobby O'Neill suffered the loss despite not pitching at all on Monday. Kyle Atkins came on in the seventh and did no allow a run over two innings pitched. He finishes the tournament by allowing no runs on two hits over 5-1/3 innings. He has allowed just one run over his last 11 innings.

Senior Justin Rodriguez came on in the ninth and struck out one in a hitless ninth.

Michael Andrews was 2-for-5 in the game, going 5-for-8 over the last eight at-bats of the tournament. Johnny Farrington recorded a hit in the game and finished the Opening Round tournament by going 8-for-12 with and reached base in 11-of-16 total plate appearances.
