Fresno Pacific Knocks Off Biola on Walk-Off Wild Pitch in 14th Inning

Brian Loard

FRESNO, Calif. --- Brian Loard came up with a clutch solo home run to lead off the ninth to force extra innings, but an error and a wild pitch in the 14th gave the game to No. 13 Fresno Pacific by a 3-2 final score over No. 9 Biola in a GSAC game on Thursday in Fresno.

The Eagles suffer their second-straight loss and sixth in their last nine games, dropping to 25-16 and 19-10 in GSAC play. The Sunbirds slip past Biola into second place in the conference standings and are now 27-14 overall and 20-10 in conference action.

Loard capped a solid comeback for Biola, which was unable to muster much offense at all on the day. The Eagles had trailed 2-0 after six innings, but got one back in the seventh and tied the game in the ninth.

After neither team was able to score in the the first three extra frames, Fresno was able to walk-off with the win in the 14th. Catcher Michael Vaughan led off the inning with a single to right and moved all the way to third on a failed pick off attempt at first. After an intentional walk, a wild pitch allowed the winning run to come around to score.

The inning was the only bad one for reliever Bobby O'Neill, who had allowed just one hit over the previous two innings. He suffered the loss to drop to 2-5 on the season.

The game started out as a great battle between two pitchers. Biola starter Alex Brueske allowed two runs on nine hits over the first eight innings of the contest while Fresno starter Jesse Darrah surrendered one run on five hits over seven.

Biola got its first run of the game in the seventh as Drake Fages led off with a double down the left-field line, then came around to score on a double by the next batter, Mac Sullivan. Those were just the fourth and fifth hits of the game for the Eagles with Fages hit snapping a streak of 11-straight retired by Darrah.

However, Loard's home run leading off the ninth proved to be the final hit for the Eagles, who would have just one baserunner reach in extra innings.

Biola closes out the four-game series with a doubleheader on Saturday at Biola. The twinbill begins at Noon.
