LA MIRADA, Calif. --- Junior
Kevin Ryan saw his no-hit bid end in the top of the eighth inning on a single to right, but he made it the only hit he would allow on the day, tossing a complete-game shutout as Biola defeated Westmont 6-0 in a GSAC game on Wednesday afternoon at Eagles Diamond.
The Eagles improve to 11-8 with the victory and move to 5-3 in the GSAC. The Warriors drop to 9-11 and to 2-7 in conference play.
Ryan was outstanding on the day, tossing a perfect game through the first 5-2/3 innings before walking a batter with two out. He then hit a batter in the seventh but still carried the no-hitter into the eighth inning. However, leadoff hitter Jordan Bottenfield hit a 1-0 pitch cleanly through the right side to break up the no-no.
Ryan answered by striking out the side in the eighth, then closed out the game by throwing just 10 pitches in the ninth. He finished the game with eight strikeouts, one walk, one hit batter and just one hit allowed in nine innings to improve to 3-0 on the season.
Biola's offense gave him all of the support he would need in the contest with
Brian Loard and
Christopher Neal driving in all six runs. In the second inning, Neal drove home a pair with a two-out single down the right-field line to give Biola an early 2-0 lead.
The Eagles added one more in the third as Loard drove in a run with a single to left to plate
Garrett Leon and make it 3-0.
Biola would cap the scoring in the fifth. After a walk a hit batter put two on with one out, Loard hit a three-run home run to left to double the lead.
Neal, who batted second for the first time this season, went 3-for-5 on the day with two RBIs while Loard went 2-for-3 with four RBIs on the afternoon.
The two teams return to Eagles Diamond on Thursday to play game two of the four-game series at 2:00 p.m.
