LA MIRADA, Calif. ---
Drake Fages' first-inning grand slam—his NAIA-best 11th home run of the season—gave starting pitcher
Nick Turner all the offense he would need as the sophomore helped Biola knock off No. 8 Point Loma Nazarene 7-2 on Monday on Eagles Diamond.
The Eagles improve to 10-8 and move to 4-3 in GSAC play while dropping the Sea Lions to 9-5 and to 4-3 in conference. Monday's game was the first of two make-up games for the doubleheader rained out on Feb. 26.
Turner had yet another solid outing, going seven innings and allowing just two runs on seven hits while striking out three. The sophomore improves to 2-1 on the season and keeps his ERA below 2.00 at 1.98 on the season.
Fages got the offense off to a quick start in the first.
Boone Farrington led off the frame with a single up the middle which was followed by a walk to
Benji Sutherland. One out later,
Mac Sullivan walked to load the bases for Fages. The junior the drilled a 3-0 pitch and sent it well over the left-field fence to put Biola up 4-0 early.
Point Loma cut the lead in half over the next two innings manufacturing a pair of runs on RBI-singles.
Turner got into trouble again in the fourth as Point Loma recorded back-to-back singles with one out. But he was able get a double play to end the threat.
Biola added an insurance run in the bottom of the seventh inning as the Farrington brothers again combined to produce. Freshman Johnny hit a two-out double down the right field line and was driving in by older brother Boone with a single up the middle.
The Eagles tacked on two more in the eighth.
Vinnie Fayard, who struggled against Point Loma Nazarene starter Brett Carlile, greeted his replacement Kelsen Boyer with a double to left. With one out and one more runner on, pinch-hitter
Michael Andrews hit a single to right to score one with the other coming around on a misplay by the rightfielder.
Kyle Atkins and
Jonathan Cade each pitched a solid inning of relief for to close out the game for the Eagles.
Carlile did not pitch poorly for Point Loma, despite not receiving much run support. After the first-inning slam, he did not allow a hit and Biola had just two baserunners over the next six innings before the Farringtons finally got to him for a run in the seventh.
Fages has been on quite a tear in his first season with the Eagles. He currently leads the team with a .397 batting average and his 11 home runs are nearly halfway to the Biola school record of 24 set by Sam Orr during the 2003 season.
The Eagles have now taken two of three from the eighth-ranked Sea Lions after splitting the first two games of the series played in San Diego at the end of February.
Biola begins a four-game, GSAC series with Westmont College this week, hosting the Warriors on Wednesday and Thursday at 2:00 p.m. before traveling to Santa Barbara on Saturday for a series-ending doubleheader at 11:00 a.m.
