AZUSA, Calif. --- Biola picked up one win, but lost two on the day, as Azusa Pacific won the game suspended by darkness, 5-4 in 15 innings before Biola took the first game of the regularly-scheduled doubleheader 7-4. The Eagles fell in the nightcap 8-4 on Saturday.
The Eagles end the day with a record of 9-8 and 3-3 in GSAC play after splitting the four-game series with the Cougars. Azusa Pacific is now 10-9, 3-5 in the conference.
The two teams opened the day by completing the game called due to darkness on Thursday, suspended with the score tied at 4-4 heading into the 15th inning. Biola's longest game in nine years came to an end quickly on Saturday as Alex Ring, who tied the game Thursday with a two-out RBI, drove home the go-ahead run wit two out in the top of the 15th.
Azusa Pacific then held on for the win, allowing just a two-out single in the bottom of the frame.
In the first game of the regularly scheduled doubleheader, Azusa Pacific got the jump on Biola with three runs in the bottom of the first inning. However, the Eagles slowly worked their way back into the game, scoring in the top of the second with a run on a bases-loaded double play and adding another in the third on an RBI-single by
Benji Sutherland.
Biola tied the game in the fifth as
Boone Farrington belted solo homerun over the short porch in right field. But the lead was short-lived as Azusa Pacific went back on top on a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the frame.
The Eagles answered back with a three-spot in the sixth, scoring all three runs with two out. With runners at first and second and two down,
Josh Burket,
Brian Loard and
Christopher Neal collected run-scoring singles to put Biola up 6-4.
The Eagles added an insurance run in the seventh on sacrifice fly by
Drake Fages.
The Biola bullpen was fantastic as
Alex Brueske (1-0) picked up the victory in relief, allowing just one hit over 4-1/3 innings and striking out three. With one out in the ninth,
Cameron McVey was called upon to close out the game and did so by striking out APU's second and third hitters in the order.
In the second game, Azusa Pacific again started out with a three-spot in the first inning with Brent Warren providing the big blow: a two-out, two-run single up the middle.
Biola got one back in the third as
Johnny Farrington doubled with two outs and came around to score on a single by his brother
Boone Farrington.
But the Cougars answered back with an unearned run in the bottom of the frame and then blew the game open with a four-run fourth to go up 8-1.
Biola slowly clawed its way back into the contest with a run in each of the final three innings. Sutherland singled home
Boone Farrington in the fifth.
Drake Fages connected on his 10th home run of the season to close the gap to 8-3 in the sixth. In the seventh, the Eagles manufactured a run as
Boone Farrington scored on a sacrifice fly by
Vinnie Fayard.
But the Eagles could get no closer and ultimately lost 8-4.
Bobby O'Neill suffered the loss to drop to 0-3 on the season, allowing seven runs on six hits over 3-2/3 innings.
Biola returns to action on Monday, hosting Point Loma Nazarene University in a GSAC game, the first of two make-up games following the teams' rained out doubleheader in La Mirada last week. First pitch is set for 2:00 p.m.
