ST. PETERS, Mo. --- Senior April Smith earned her second NAIA individual title in as many years by winning the 400 Individual Medley in a school record time of 4:30.23 on Friday night at the 2011 NAIA Swimming and Diving Championships held at the St. Peter's Rec-Plex.

Smith, who won Biola's first swimming championship last season by winning the 200 breaststroke, added another piece of hardware to her haul, dropping six seconds off her preliminary time to win by two seconds. In the morning she lowered her school-record time down to 4:36.70, seeding her fifth in the finals. She ended up dropping another six seconds to finish with a 4:30.23 and easily won the event.

The victory helped move the women into seventh place overall after the third day of the four-day competition with 141 points. The men's team sits in 12th place with 52. The Eagles have had 16 record-breaking swims at the 2011 Championships and have 10 new records overall.

Rachael Sirjord, Brittney Rosania, and Emily Mosbacher all swam came back to swim in the evening consolation finals in the 100 butterfly seeded 11th (Mosbacher), 12th(Rosania), and 13th(Sirjord) . Sirjord ended the evening in 10th place (58.98), Mosbacher in 12th place (59:13), and Rosania in 13th place (59.38). Sirjord and Mosbacher both swam times faster than their morning swims. 

Nathan Roe broke the men's 200 freestyle record during prelims with a time of 1:44.16, only to see it broken minutes later by teammate Chris Stutzman who recorded a time of 1:43.19. Stutzman made it back for the consolation finals heat and placed 16th overall.

Mark Diaz also broke the men's 100 breaststroke record with a time of 59.84. He later split a 58.29 in the breaststroke leg of the Men's 400 Medley Relay. The relay team of Stutzman, Diaz, Roe and Bretton Smith,  also broke Biola's previous record with a time of 4:35.79. They then went on to further broke Biola's record in the consolation Finals Heat with a time of 4:35.18, placing 11th overall. 

Amber Kiel broke Biola's 100 backstroke record, which she previously held, with a time of 59.18 during her morning prelim swim, just missing out on the finals heat. In the consolation finals, Kiel finished ninth overall, breaking the record again with a time of 58.85.

The women's 400 Medley Relay swam a fast prelim time and earned a spot in the finals heat of the event for the evening. In the finals, the team of Amber Kiel, April Smith, Brittney Rosania and Emily Mosbacher went on to break Biola's record (which the four held from last year's national championships) with a time of 4:00.45, moving them up one spot to 7th place in the event. 

In the 200 Freestyle, Monica Hurt (1:59.97), Bailey Johnson (2:00.94), and Alison Seek (2:02.91) swam season best times during the morning prelims.
