OAKLAND, Calif. --- Biola's offense was held quiet in the opener, but erupted for 16 hits in seven innings in the night cap as the Eagles split a non-conference doubleheader at Patten University, losing 2-1 in the first game and winning the second 11-4 on Wednesday afternoon.
Biola moves to 3-2 at the end of the day while Patten ends the day with a 3-5 record.
The Eagles wasted an oustanding pitching performance by four pitchers in the opener. Starter
Bobby O'Neill allowed just two runs--one earned--over four innings pitched, scattering three hits while walking three and adding three strikeouts.
Nick Turner,
Kevin Ryan and
Jonathan Cade allowed just one hit over the final four innings to help keep the score close.
But the Biola offense mustered just five hits and one run against five Patten pitchers. That run came in the third as
Brian Loard led off with a double, then came around to score on a double by
Boone Farrington. However, the two runs scored by the Lions in the bottom of the second proved to be too much for the Eagles to overcome.
In the second game, Biola's offense came alive, scoring 11 runs on 16 hits in a seven-inning victory. The game got off to a solid start as
Drake Fages hit a 3-run home run to cap a four-run inning for the Eagles.
After Patten plated on in the bottom of the frame, Biola answered back with another four-spot in the second with Loard clearing the bases with a double to score three.
Garrett Leon drove in Loard with a single to cap the scoring.
In the four, Biola added two more on Fages' second home run of the game and fourth of the season--a two-run shot to right.
Erick Allen picked up the vicotry for the Eagles, allowing just two runs on four hits over five innings.
Loard finished the day going 3-for-5 with three runs scored and four RBIs. Fages was 3-for-7 with five RBIs and two runs scored.
Biola continues its six-game road trip on Thursday with a single game against NCAA Division II Cal State Monterey Bay beginning at 2:00 pm.
