ORANGE, Calif. --- Senior April Smith broke a decade-old school record in the 400 IM, one of two events she won on the day at the Chapman University Invitational held on Saturday at the CU Pool in Orange.

The Biola women took top honors with 118 total points, edging out Chapman which had 114 with Mills taking third and Vanguard placing fourth. On the men's side, Chapman won with an overall 92 points while Vanguard narrowly edged Biola for second, 54-51.

Smith cruised to an easy win in the event with a time of 4:38.36, breaking the previous school-best by over four seconds. She won the event by nearly 20 seconds and is the second-fastest time in the NAIA this year. The previous mark was established during the 2000 season.

Smith also took top honors in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:08.43. 

In addition, freshman Monica Hurt recorded a nationals cut in the 200 freestyle, placing fourth overall with a time of 2:03.89. Junior Rachael Sirjord added a pair of nationals cuts. She placed second in the 100 butterfly with a time of 1:02.47 and placed third in the 100 free with a time of 57.23.

On the men's side, Nathan Roe improved his season-best time in the 500 free, cutting seven seconds off his time to earn a national qualifying time, placing second with a time of 4:53.27. Roe also improved his 200 free time, winning the event with a time of 1:47.89. He barely out-touched teammate Chris Stutzman, who placed second with a time of 1:47.95.

Biola's next competition comes at the Pacific Collegiate Swimming Conference Championships on Feb. 16-19 held at Olympic Plaza in Long Beach.
