ROHNERT PARK, Calif. --- Biola's offense out-hit Sonoma State in the final game of its six-game road trip, but came away with a loss, falling 6-5 on Saturday afternoon at Seawolf Field in Rohnert Park.
The Eagles end the road trip with a 1-5 record, with all five losses coming by just one run. Biola is now 3-5 on the season. Sonoma State remains perfect at 5-0.
Biola starter
Kevin Ryan was crusing through the first four innings, allowing just one run on one hit in the early going. The offense even came to his aid with a big four-run fifth inning to spot him a 4-1 lead.
However, the Seawolves answered right back with five runs in the bottom of the frame to go back on top for good.
Despite allowing just five hits to Sonoma State, three of them drove in runs as Biola pitchers walked seven in the contest.
Biola picked up therir four runs in the fifth with the first two coming off an error by the Seawolves. The other two came off RBI-doubles from
Mac Sullivan and
Garrett Leon.
The Eagles would add one more run in the sixth to make it a one-run game thanks to a squeeze bunt by
Johnny Farrington.
Biola had a runner reach base in each of the final three innings but were unable to push a run across the rest of the way. In fact, Biola had a runner on base in all but the first innings and left 11 runners on.
Bobby O'Neill suffered the loss for Biola, allowing three runs on four hits in 1/3 of an inning.
Nate Coronado,
Jonathan Cade and
Cameron McVey combined to pitch a hitless final 3-1/3 innings to keep the Eagles close.
Sullivan and Leon each finished with three hits in four at-bats to lead Biola's offense.
Drake Fages added two hits in four at-bats.
Biola returns home for a pair of games against Arizona Christian University (formerly Southwestern College) on Tuesday and Wednesday, both games starting at 2:00 p.m.
