ROHNERT PARK, Calif. --- Sonoma State's O'Koyea Dickson drove home the only run of the game with an RBI-single in the bottom of the eighth inning as Biola fell 1-0 to the Seawolves in a non-conference game on Friday afternoon at Seawolf Diamond.
The Eagles drop to 3-4 with the loss and are now 1-4 on their six-game Northern California road trip. Sonoma State, which is typically one of the top teams in NCAA Division II, improves to 4-0 on the season.
Biola starter
Nick Turner was outstanding in his second start of the season, scattering three hits over seven shutout innings. He walked two but recorded six strikeouts. However, the offense couldn't push across a run to help out the starter.
The stalemate continued into the eighth inning as seniro
Kyle Atkins came into pitch for Biola. Atkins surrendered a lead-off single, got an out on a sacrifice bunt, but surrendered a single to Dickson to push across the first run of the game.
The Seawolves would load the bases with one out in the frame, threatening to add insurance runs, but Atkins ended the rally by coaxing a double play for the final two outs.
In the top of the ninth, Biola looked to work its ninth-inning magic like in Thursday's game at Monterey Bay. Pinch-hitter
Josh Burket led off the inning with a single. He was replaced by
Karl Stuck, who worked into scoring position with a stolen base. But the rally ended as Sonoma State closer Joey Van Cleave recorded an infield popout and a strikeout to end the game.
Biola stranded nine runners in the contest and was just 1-of-15 with runners on base. In the fourth, the Eagles recorded back-to-back singles with two out, but were unable to get another clutch two-out hit to push a run across.
All four of Biola's losses this year have come by a single run with the Eagles scoring one or less run in two of those.
Biola closes out road trip on Saturday against the Seawolves in a single game starting at 11:00 a.m.
