Biola Comes Back But Falls in Ninth to Cal State Monterey Bay

Vinnie Fayard

SEASIDE, Calif. --- Biola scored a run in each of the final three innings to the tie the game late only to see Cal State Monterey Bay win 7-6 on a walk-off double in the bottom of the ninth of a non-conference game in Seaside on Thursday.

The loss drops the Eagles to 3-3 on the season while the Otters pick up their first win and are now 1-3.

Biola got off to a great start, opening the scoring with a three-spot in the top of the second as Brent Opdyke connected on a three-run shot to right-center.

But things quickly unraveled for the Eagles as Cal State Monterey Bay scored six times in the bottom of the frame. All of the damage came with two out and came from six singles and two walks.

Biola starter Alex Bruekse shook off the rough start and allowed just two more baserunners over the next 2-2/3 innings, but the damage had been done.

The Eagles mounted a late comeback attempt, starting in the seventh. Trailing 6-3, Biola got one run back in the seventh thanks to a solo home run off the bat of Brian Loard. The Eagles added another run in the eighth on a sacrifice fly by Loard, but ended the inning with runners at the corners.

In the top of the ninth, Biola was able to tie the game as Johnny Farrington drew a bases-loaded walk. However, despite the bases being full of Eagles with just one out, Biola was unable to take the lead as Drake Fages bounced into an inning-ending double play.

In the bottom of the frame, the Otters wasted little time ending the game. After Tyler Young led off the inning with a single and moved to second on a wild pitch, Greg Fujii brought him home with a walk-off double.

Kyle Atkins suffered the loss for the Eagles while Jake Paolinetti snagged the win in relief after the blown save.

Biola closes out the six-game road trip with a pair of games on Friday and Saturday at Sonoma State University. Friday's game starts at 1:00 p.m. while Saturday's contest begins at 11:00 a.m.
