Given Kalipinde and
Davey Hopkins combined for 46 points and keyed a long 21-point, second-half run to lead Biola to an 80-68 victory over the University of the Fraser Valley (B.C.) in a non-conference game on Wednesday night at Chase Gymnasium.
The victory was the fourth-straight for the Eagles, who improve to 10-2 on the season, while dropping the Cascades to 7-6 overall.
Kalipinde had a game-high 26 points thanks to five three-pointers and added seven rebounds. He scored 12-straight points at the beginning of the second half, starting Biola's pivotal run. Hopkins helped finish it off by scoring nine of his 20 points immediately following Kalipinde's stretch and also added six rebounds and four assists on the night.
The big turning point of the game came early in the second half, when Biola broke a 39-39 tie with a long 22-1 run over a nearly six-minute stretch to break the game wide open. Kalipinde started the run with his third three-pointer over a two-minute stretch to break the tie, followed by a three from Hopkins two possessions later to make it a six-point game. Hopkins would score nine of the next 10 Biola points to help break the game open.
Fraser Valley would cut the lead back to single digits with just over six minutes left as a three-pointer by Sheldon Bjorgaard made it a 67-58 game. But the Eagles would not let the Cascades any closer than eight the rest of the way and cruised to the 12-point win.
Biola opened up strong, jumping out to an early 15-4 lead nine minutes into the contest. But Fraser Valley kept things close and closed out the half with a five-point run to take a 30-29 lead at the break.
The Eagles used the three-pointer to their advantage in the second half, connecting on 7-of-9 attempts in the second after hitting one out of eight in the the first. Biola also held a big edge on the boards, out-rebounding the Cascades 43-24 with 15 of those coming on the offensive glass.
Andre Murillo added 14 points and seven rebounds for the Eagles with
Chase Adams scoring 10 points.
Joel Friesen led Fraser Valley with 16 points and six assists.
Biola continues a stretch of three games in three days, hosting the University of Victoria in a non-conference tilt on Thursday night at 7:30 p.m.
