LA MIRADA, Calif. --- Biola University closed out the fall season ranked No. 11 in the 2011-12 NAIA Learfield Sports Director's Cup standings. The Eagles picked up points in four of their five fall sports and are the second-highest ranked team from the Golden State Athletic Conference.

Biola has 174 total points, missing the top 10 by just four points, as the Eagles recorded their highest finish after a fall season ever. 

The Eagles were led by the volleyball team which by virtue of the NAIA Tournament's biggest upset, move into the NAIA Quarterfinals where they finished tied for fifth and earned 73 points. 

The women's cross country team finished 12th at the NAIA Championships to earn 54 points while a 26th-place finish by the men's team netted 22 points. 

The Biola men's soccer team made its second national tournament appearance in the last three years, earning 25 points by finishing tied for 17th overall.

Azusa Pacific leads the way with 359 points while Cal State San Marcos is in second with 265 points. Fellow GSAC schools behind Biola were  Westmont (17th-149 pts), Point Loma Nazarene (21st-134 pts), The Master's (23rd-120 pts) and Concordia CA (25th-115).

The Learfield Sports Directors' Cup was developed as a joint effort between the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA) and USA Today. Points are awarded based on each institution's finish in up to 14 sports--seven women's and seven men's.

The Director Cup program's philosophy is: “A program that honors institutions maintaining a broad-based program, achieving success in many sports, both men's and women's, in which all sports that the NCAA or NAIA offers a championship, along with Division I-A football, and all student-athletes that compete in those sports, are treated equally,” according to the Learfield Sports Directors Cup website.
