HANNIBAL, Mo. --- Biola's second NAIA Tournament appearance over the last three years kicks-off against a tough opponent as the Eagles face No. 15 Hannibal-LaGrange University in the 2011 NAIA Men's Soccer National Championship Opening Round match on Saturday afternoon in Hannibal, Mo. The game is slated to begin at 1:00 p.m. CT (11:00 a.m. PT).
The Eagles, who enter the game with a 13-5-2- record, finished the regular season ranked No. 19 after taking the GSAC Tournament Championship last week over Concordia. The win gave Biola the GSAC's automatic berth to the NAIA tournament--its second tournament appearance in three years.
Biola has won six-straight games coming into Saturday's tilt including five on the road. That's where the Eagles find themselves this weekend, in Hannibal, Missouri, where they take on Hannibal-LaGrange University.
The Trojans picked up the American Midwest Conference automatic berth by virtue of a win over Park University (Mo.) in the conference championship match. HLGU is 16-4-0 on the season with a perfect 7-0-0 conference record. This is just the second national tournament appreance by HLU, which played to a tie in 2008 and lost 4-2 in a penalty-kick shootout.
Biola is making its fourth trip to the NAIA National Championship Tournament and its second in the last three years. Despite reaching the NAIA Quarterfinals, the Eagles are still looking for their first win in the championships, going 0-3-4 all-time including going 0-1-2 in three matches last season. Biola picked up a shootout win after playing to ties in the first two rounds of the 2009 tournament before falling to Rio Grande University in the NAIA Quarterfinals.
The 15 Saturday winners, as well as No. 4 Mobile (Ala.), will advance to the National Championship Final Site from Nov. 28 - Dec. 3 in Orange Beach, Ala. Biola will face the winner of the game between No. 2 Lindsay Wilson University (Ky.) and Roberts Wesleyan University (N.Y.) in the NAIA Second Round. That second-round match will take place on Monday, Nov. 28 at 2:30 p.m. CT.
