LA MIRADA, Calif. --- Biola's
Collins Egbe netted his first collegiate goal in the 39th minute and the Eagles' defense made it stand up in a 1-0 GSAC victory over Hope International University on Wednesday night.
Biola snaps a three-match losing streak to improve to 6-2-2, and moves to 1-1-0 in GSAC play. The Royals drop to 3-4-1 overall and to 0-2-0 in the conference.
Egbe gathered in a blocked shot inside the box and drove it into the far right corner to record his first collegiate goal and put the Eagles up early, 1-0. Biola had dominated the match to that point, but broke the ice with the goal.
The Eagles had a chance to extend their lead with two quality chances over a three-minute span in the second half. The first came on a shot by
Marco Ruvalcaba which rattled off the right post. The second was another tough break for Ruvalcaba as Biola was awarded a penalty kick after a hand ball in the box. However, his kick was saved by Hope goalkeeper Jhovany Hernandez.
The Eagles' defense held strong through the rest of the match, despite facing a late charge from the Royals. Hope's best two chances came over the final 15 minutes of the contest. With 15 minutes left, Zach Hoffer had an open shot off an odd-man break, but his shot beat the keeper but missed just wide.
The best chance for the Royals to tie came in the 83rd minute aas a blast by Matthew Howard was deflected by Biola netminder
Aaron Fenlason but was still heading toward the goal. But
Dylan Wingrove made a sliding save, clearing the ball off the line to keep the Eagle lead.
Fenlason had a solid night in goal, recording four saves and facing nine shots overall to earn the shutout, his fourth of the season.
Hernandez allowed just the one goal on 19 shots, recording seven saves.
Biola returns to action on Saturday, heading south to face San Diego Christian College in a GSAC match at 3:00 p.m.
