Biola Narrowly Misses Upset, Falling 1-0 at No. 4 Pt. Loma

SAN DIEGO --- Biola dominated the second half of the its match against its third-straight NAIA Top 15 team, but ultimately could not find the tying goal, falling 1-0 at No. 4 Point Loma Nazarene University in a match between the GSAC's top two teams on Saturday afternoon in San Diego.

The Eagles saw their five-match winning-streak snapped as they fall to 8-6-0 on the season, but remain in a tie for second place in the conference with a GSAC record of 5-2-0. The Sea Lions remain undefeated for the year with a 15-0-1 record and wrap up the GSAC regular season title with a 7-0-0 record.

Point Loma seemed to control the match through the first 30 minutes as Biola appeared to be a bit frantic, likely pressing too hard for an opening goal. The pressure by the home side yielded the match's lone goal in the 11th minute as Erica Wessels headed home a corner by Katherine Caldwell.

After playing solid defense to keep the score at 1-0, Biola began to press forward a bit at the end of the half. The Eagles would get a great chance in the 36th minute as Chrissy King fired a point-blank shot only to see a great diving save by PLNU Tiffany Kracy.

But momentum swing back heavily into Biola's favor in the second half, but the luck just did not follow. Over a span of a five minutes around the 55th minute, the Eagles hit the cross bar twice. The first came off a scramble just inside the box with Jessica Austin shot beating the keeper, but hitting of the bar and being cleared from danger. Five minutes later, Taylor Lundquist fired another one off the woodwork on a clean shot from 20 yards out.

Biola continued to push forward and had a fantastic chance to tie the match in the 88th minute as Sarina Coutin's shot beat Kracy, but was blocked at the goalline by PLNU defender Madi White.

Both teams recorded seven shots in the contest with the Eagles outshooting the Sea Lions 5-1 in the second half. Kracy and Biola netminder Erin Frushon each recorded a pair of saves.

Biola closes out the regular season next week, likely needing just one victory in its final two contests to earn a first-round home game in the GSAC tournament. The Eagles head north to face No. 24 The Master's College on Wednesday at 3:00 p.m., then return home for senior night and the final match of the regular season on Saturday, hosting Vanguard University at 7:00 p.m.
