Biola Upsets No. 2 California Baptist, 3-1

LA MIRADA, Calif. --- For the second time this week, Biola pulled off an upset with No. 2 California Baptist University playing the victim this time. The Eagles fought back from a rough start and dominated the visitors in the final half of the match to win 20-25, 25-21, 25-23, 25-16 in a GSAC match Saturday night.

Biola, ranked No. 9 in the latest NAIA National Rankings, improves to 12-4 on the season an to 5-1 in GSAC play. The Lancers, ranked No. 2 in the same poll, suffer their first defeat of the year, dropping to 18-1 and 5-1 in conference.

Senior Christine Douglas led Biola with 19 kills and added two blocks while senior Tavea Hampton continued her strong play as of late with nine kills and three blocks.

The Eagles got off to a slow start in the match as Cal Baptist looked set to cruise to another easy victory. The Lancer trailed 11-9 in the first set, but used a quick 5-1 run to go up 14-12. After Biola went back up with a three-point outburst, Cal Baptist slammed the door with an 11-4 run to wrap up the first set 25-20. The Eagles would hit just .059 in the first set, committing nine errors to only 11 kills. 

In the second set, the two sides battled back and forth until Biola broke a 14-14 tie with a three-point run to take a 17-14 lead. The Lancers pulled to within one at 19-18, but would get no closer as Biola scored six of the final nine points to tie the match at 1-1.

From that point, the match completely turned in favor of the Eagles. Biola opened the third set with a 12-3 run. Cal Baptist cut the lead to four with an 8-3 run, but the Eagles responded with a 7-2 run to take a commanding 22-13 lead. However, the Lancers made things interesting at the end, narrowing the gap to on with an improbable 10-2 run, making it a 24-23 game. But Kim Russell managed to end the drama with a kill to seal the set. 

Biola did not let the Lancers continue the momentum in the fourth, leading from start to finish. The Eagles slowly pulled away from Cal Baptist with short runs, then leading 19-15, scored five of the final six points emphasized by a solo block by Douglas on match point to wrap up the victory.

Biola played fantastic defense in the final three sets, keeping rallies alive and holding the Lancers to a .124 attack percentage overall. Each of Biola's setters recorded a double-double in the match. Senior Abbie Wright had 24 assists and 12 digs while freshman Gracee Gallarda posted 20 assists and 10 digs. 

Freshman libero Emily Weingartner had a season-high 21 digs in the contest and did not commit a serve receive error in 22 opportunities. 

The Eagles return to action on Tuesday (Sept. 28), traveling to Santa Barbara to face No. 24 Westmont College at 7:00 p.m.
