EL CAJON, Calif. --- Freshman forward
Allexa Mendoza scored an early goal for Biola, but that would prove to it as the Eagles would wind up with a 1-1 draw in their GSAC opener at San Diego Christian College on Saturday afternoon.
Biola moves to 3-2-2 on the season with second-straight tie and starts the conference slate at 0-0-1. The Hawks are now 4-2-2 and 0-0-1 in conference play.
Mendoza gathered a loose ball in the box after the SDCC distributed the ball poorly out of the back. Mendoza quickly dribble in on the scrambling keeper and beat her with a shot to the far post. The goal in the ninth minute put Biola on top early. The goal was the second of the season for the freshman.
However, the Hawks got that goal back in the 33rd minute as Sarah Le cut through the defense and fired a shot past the Biola goalie to even the score.
From there, the defenses for either side kicked in. Eagle goalie
Erin Frushon made eight saves in the contest while facing 15 shots to keep the score level. On the other side, Katelyn Ogle made five saves in the first half while Emily Garbez made five in the second half and two over time sessions.
Biola held a 19-15 shot advantage in the contest and had a great chance to score even earlier than they did. The Eagles pressed hard early on and got a great opportunity when
Kati Bell stepped into the shot, beating the keeper only to see it ring of the post and be cleared from danger.
The match was the third-straight overtime match for the Eagles and the second-straight tie. Biola is 1-0-2 in its last three games.
The Eagles return home on Tuesday (Sept. 28) for a tough match-up against No. 8 California Baptist University beginning at 7:00 p.m. on Al Barbour Field.
