Biola Sweeps Past Upset-Minded The Master's College

Amy Mosebar

SANTA CLARITA, Calif. --- Senior Amy Mosebar helped make her birthday one to remember with nine kills and a match-high .467 attack percentage to lead Biola to a hard-fought 25-22, 25-18, 25-22 victory over The Master's College in a GSAC match on Saturday night.

The Eagles improve to 10-4 on the season with their fourth win in their last five matches and move to 3-1 in GSAC play. The Mustangs drop to 5-8, 0-4 in conference action.

Mosebar had nine kills and committed just two errors in 15 swings—including four kills in five swings without an error in the third set. Sophomore outside hitter Christine Douglas also had nine kills and a block while senior middle blocker Tavea Hampton recorded seven kills and three blocks.

The trip up to The Master's College featured a (tire) blowout and it appeared as though the Eagles may have been expecting the same in their match that evening. However, the Mustangs put forth their best effort of the season and gave Biola a run.

In the first set, the Eagles opened with an 8-4 run and appeared ready to cruise. But the Mustangs fought back quickly and turned the deficit into a 17-15 advantage midway through the set. After a timeout, Biola responded with a 6-1 run to take back the lead with Mosebar closing out the set with a kill.

With The Master's leading 11-10 in the second game, Biola finally came alive and pulling away with an 11-4 run which featured a strong performance by Hampton, who had three kills and a block in the stretch. The Mustangs could get no closer than four the rest of the way and again, Mosebar closed out the set with a kill.

Biola continued to cruise at the beginning of the third set, opening with a 12-6 lead. But The Master's clawed back into the contest and used a five-point run to take its first lead of the set at 21-20, giving the home side the shift in momentum. Nicolette Mather quickly responded with a monster kill which quieted the crowd. The Eagles would then break a 22-22 tie with kills by Kim Russell, Mosebar and Douglas to close out the match.

The Master's was led by the 11 kills from Jenna Kapuscinski, who also had five digs and a block.

Despite the close scores, Biola was able to hold the Mustangs to a .096 attack percentage while posting a .238 mark in the contest.

Senior setter Abbie Wright recorded a double-double with 20 assists and 11 digs in the match.

Biola returns to action on Tuesday (Sept. 21), traveling to face arch-rival Azusa Pacific University in a GSAC contest. The Eagles take on the Cougars beginning at 7:00 p.m.
