SAN MARCOS, Calif. --- Despite playing down a man for nearly 60 minutes and all of overtime, Biola University was able to pull out a 1-1 draw in a non-conference match at Cal State San Marcos on Saturday afternoon.
The Eagles move to 1-4-1 on the season while the Cougars end the day at 3-3-2.
After a physical start to the contest yielded a number of cards and few chances, Biola's
Kennedy Chongo received a highly questionable red card in the 31st minute, forcing the Eagles to play down a man.
However, Biola held strong and managed to score a goal to go on top in the 48th minute.
Tony Montalvo started the pay with a serve from the right side.
Kevin Kiser played the ball across to
Marco Ruvalcaba who kicked it in to put the Eagles up 1-0 early in the second.
The Eagles had a few chances to extend their lead through the second half though two late chances were turned away by a pair of strong saves by CSUSM goalie Kevin Ernst.
With time winding down in the match, the Cougars finally were able to get the equalizer as a scramble in front of the Biola net after a throw-in managed to turn yield a late goal with just 40 seconds left in the contest.
Both teams had a number of chances in extra time with the Cougars outshooting the Eagles 5-4. However, neither side could convert their opportunities into goals and the match ended in a draw.
Despite playing down a man for the majority of the match, Biola still outshot Cal State San Marcos by a 14-12 count. Eagle netminder
Aaron Fenlason recorded three saves on the afternoon while Ernst made seven saves.
Biola returns to action on Thursday (Sept. 23), hosting Marymount University (Calif.) at 7:00 p.m. in its first home match since late-August. The Eagles then open GSAC play on Saturday (Sept. 25) at San Diego Christian.
