LA MIRADA, Calif. ---- Biola Men's Soccer opened its 2026 home slate with a non-conference clash against Cal State San Marcos on Saturday afternoon. The game took a bit of a backseat though, as Saturday also marked the official signing day for the team's Team Impact match, Matthew.
Earlier in the day, the Biola community hosted Matthew and his family inside Chase Gymnasium for the signing ceremony and his very own media day photo shoot. It signing day marks the beginning of a relationship that will last at least the next two years as Matthew officially joins the squad. He led the team onto the field and joined them on the bench as they battled the Cougars in a classic showdown.
Luca McGreevey Couchman put the Eagles in front, finishing off an assist from
Jeremy Larson to open the scoring. The first-half finish had the Eagles staring down their first win over CSUSM since 2021.
The lead didn't last, however, as the visiting Cougars answered back before halftime to level the match 1-1 heading into the break. CSUSM completed the comeback in the second half, taking the lead for good on a goal in the 47th minute.
Biola gave it all that it had down the stretch, out-shooting the Cougars 8-3 in the second half of action, forcing the CSUSM keeper to make three saves. Two of those three came off absolute lasers from
Jeremy Larson, which get dealt with just narrowly by the man in goal for the Cougars.
With the result, Biola falls to 0-4-2 on the season, while Cal State San Marcos improves to 3-1-0. Biola closes out its preseason one week from tonight, with a September 19th non-conference matchup against Concordia (2-2-1).
