Biola Comes From Behind to Beat La Verne 13-6

Vinnie Fayard

LA VERNE, Calif. --- Biola fought back from a pair of early deficits, scoring nine runs over the span of the sixth and seventh innings to knock off the University of La Verne 13-6 in a non-conference game on Tuesday.

The Eagles, fresh off a tough 2-1 loss on Monday, head into their spring break with an 18-10 record while the Leopards fall to 13-12 on the season.

Despite falling behind 4-0 and 6-4, Biola's bats came alive late and propelled the Eagles to a much-needed victory. Garrett Leon's three-run home run in the top of the sixth gave Biola its first lead of the game at 7-6, then the Eagles tacked on six more runs in a big seventh inning to cruise to the win.

Things did get off to a rocky start for the Eagles, as the Leopards scored three runs in the first inning aided by a pair of Biola errors. La Verne would add another in the second to take an early 4-0 lead.

Biola got back into the game in the third with a four-spot. Vinnie Fayard and Trevor Blood led off the inning with singles, but the Leopards were able to get a pair of quick outs and looked as if they might get out of the inning with no damage done. But a two-run triple by Rucky McKinley plated the first two runs and got the Biola offense going. After a walk, two more runs came around on an error by the Leopards, tying the game at 4-4.

La Verne came back with two runs in the fifth to take back the lead on a two-run home run by Jason Moralez. That would be it for Biola starter Dale Harder, who allowed six runs, though just five were earned.

But Fayard's two-out, three-run home run in the top of the sixth put the Eagles back on top. After a 1-2-3 bottom of the sixth, Biola added six more runs to comfortably go on top 13-6. Armando Arzate drove in the first run with a bases-loaded single, the Boone Farrington added more with a two-run single. Leon drove in another run with a single, then Fayard capped the scoring with a two-run home run.

The Biola bullpen was impressive over the final 4-2/3 innings of the game, allowing just one hit and striking out four batters. Bobby O'Neill picked up the victory of the Eagles in relief, tossing 2-2/3 innings of perfect ball. Phil Blazek came on to mop things up in the eighth, allowing just one hit but not allowing the runner past first base.

The top of the lineup provided the bulk of the offense for the Eagles as the top four hitters in the lineup combined to go 12-for-21 (.571) with eight RBIs and seven runs scored. Blood had the best day of all, going 4-for-5 on the day with a walk from the clean-up spot.

Biola takes a bit of a break, returning to action on Monday (Apr. 5), hosting Cal State San Marcos in a single, non-conference game at 2:30 p.m. on Eagles Diamond.
