Brueske's Solid Outing For Naught in 2-1 Loss at Point Loma

Alex Brueske

SAN DIEGO --- Junior pitcher Alex Brueske threw one of the best games by a Biola pitcher in weeks, but the Eagles' offense failed to offer him much support as Biola lost 2-1 to No. 2 Point Loma Nazarene in a GSAC game on Monday. The seven-inning game was a make-up for a rained out affair from early in the month.

The loss drops the Eagles to 17-10 on the season after their fifth loss in six game and to 11-9 in conference play. T\he Sea Lions improve to 22-8-1, 14-6 in the GSAC.

The game was a great pitcher's duel all the way through and remained tied at 1-1 heading into the bottom of the sixth. But a two-out single by Rashad Taylor was followed by a triple by Wes Kartch which gave the Sea Lions a 2-1 lead.

Point Loma starter Steven Winnick retired the side in order in the seventh to preserve the victory. Winnick allowed just one unearned run on two hits in the game, striking out five.

Brueske did a good job of matching Winnick throughout the game, giving up nine hits and two runs over seven innings. It was the best start by a Biola pitcher since Brueske allowed one run on three hits over seven innings in a win at Westmont three weeks ago.

Point Loma got on the board first on an RBI double in the bottom of the first by Kevin Newberg.

Biola answered back with a run in the top of the third. Armando Arzate reached on a one-out error, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt, then reached third on another PLNU error. Vinnie Fayard came through with a single to score Arzate to tie the game up.

But after that single, the Eagles would get just one runner on base the rest of the way: a two-out single by Boone Farrington in the fifth.

Biola returns to action on Tuesday (March 30), traveling to face the University of  La Verne for another rain-out make-up game, beginning at 3:00 p.m. in Lav
