Biola Hangs On For Victory in Series-Finale After Another Lopsided Defeat in Opener

Kyle Atkins

COSTA MESA, Calif. --- After another one-sided defeat at the hands of GSAC-leading Vanguard University, Biola rebounded with a victory to avoid a sweep, winning 8-6 in the nightcap of the doubleheader after falling 20-7 in the opener on Saturday.

The Eagles move to 17-9, 11-8 in GSAC play while the Lions are now 25-6 overall and 16-4 in the conference.

After allowing 51 runs in the first three games of the four game series, Biola was finally able to keep the Lions off the board for the most part in the finale to score a win.

Biola got off to a quick start with a first-inning home run by Garrett Leon, then tacked on three more in the second to go up 4-0.

Vanguard got one run back in the third, but Biola scored four runs to take control. Leon again came through with a bases-loaded double to drive home two. That was followed by consecutive sacrifice flies from Vinnie Fayard and Trevor Blood to make it 8-1.

The Lions clawed back into the game and had a chance in the seventh to at least tie, putting two on with one out. However, the Eagle would work their way out of it to hold on for the much-needed victory.

Kyle Atkins would get the win in relief for the Eagles, allowing just one earned run on two hits over 3-1/3 innings of the game.

The opener wasn't nearly as exciting for Biola as the Lions jumped out to a big lead with nine runs in the first and six runs in the second. The Eagle would trail 15-1 heading into the top of the second. At that point, Biola took out its starters and rode out another lopsided loss. Biola had dropped the first two games of the series by a combined score of 31-13.

Biola returns to action on Monday (March 29) for a makeup game against Point Loma Nazarene in San Diego.
