Eagles Hope To Ride Momentum Into NAIA Semifinals

KANSAS CITY --- Biola's men's basketball team has reached the NAIA Quarterfinals with a pair of average team performances over unseeded teams. Now, the Eagles go up against one of the most athletic teams in the country and one of the NAIA's best scorers in an attempt to go reach the semifinals for the first time since 1999-2000 and just the second time in school history.

The Eagles (29-5) have not had a stellar team performance yet in the 2010 Buffalo Funds NAIA Division I Men's Basketball National Championship, but despite that, they are 2-0 so far. In the first game, Biola shot a season-low 34.6% from the field and hit just one field goal over a 10-minute stretch in the second half, but still won 66-54 over Belhaven University (Miss.).

In the Eagles' second-round game, Rocky Hampton scored a career-high 32 points and Clay Martin added a career-high 16 to lead Biola to an 80-64 victory over Park University (Mo.). But while Hampton and Martin combined for 48 of the Eagles' 80 points, a pair of Biola's starters--Danny Campbell and Josh Miller--combined for two points on 1-of-7 shooting.

Biola will need to have a great team game in order to knock off Oklahoma Baptist, which is the highest remaining seed in the tournament field.

The Bison are making their 23rd NAIA tournament appearance, the second-most among active NAIA schools. Overall, OBU is 51-20 in the tournament with one title (1966) and eight top four finishes all-time including five times being the national runners-up (last in 2002).

The Bison enter the game with a 30-3 overall record and won the conference crown in one of the toughest conferences in the NAIA: the Sooner Athletic Conference.

Oklahoma Baptist leads the NAIA in field goal percentage (56.3%) and is second in scoring margin (+19). The Bison average 88.8 points per game, fifth in the NAIA, and scored the fourth-most points in the NAIA this season at 2,664.

Leading the way is Nate Brumfield, a senior forward who ranks third in the NAIA with his 22.8 ppg average and leads everyone in field goal percentage at 69%. The Bison won the first game of the tournament without much trouble, beating St. Xavier (Ill.) 96-72. However, their second-round victory was much tougher as they needed overtime to beat Texas Wesleyan 85-75 in overtime.

Biola is 0-2 all-time against OBU including losing 41-38 in the 1996-97 NAIA second round in one of the lowest-scoring tourney games since the addition of the shot clock. Also, the Bison are 11-1 all-time against teams from California.

Biola is making its 17th appearance in the NAIA tournament and its second-straight. The Eagles have the sixth-most appearances among current NAIA teams and are 21-16 overall in tournament games. Among their 16 previous appearances, the Eagles have placed in the top four twice (2nd, 1981-82; 3rd, 1999-00).
