SAN DIEGO, Calif. --- In what was nearly a repeat of Thursday's big come-from-behind victory, Biola scored four times in the top of the ninth and had the tying run at second and Thursday's hero at the plate. However, that runner was picked off to end the rally and the game as the Eagles lost 7-6 to Point Loma Nazarene in a GSAC game on Monday.
Biola drops to 7-3 on the season and to 1-2 in GSAC play. The Sea Lions, ranked No. 2 in the NAIA Preseason rankings, improve to 10-3-1 overall and to 2-1 in the conference.
Trailing 7-2 as the teams headed to the top of the ninth inning, Biola mustered up another miracle comeback attempt with four runs in the frame. PLNU reliever Davis Koenig, who suffered the loss in Thursday's game, got things off to a rough start, walking the first two batters he faced. Maurice Wilhelm then came on and got an out before walking another Biola batter to load the bases.
Point Loma then sent in KC Kartch to mop things up, but he allowed a pinch-hit single to
Benji Sutherland, then a sacrifice fly to
Brian Loard which made it 7-4. But the Eagles were just getting going. After a walk to
Boone Farrington re-loaded the bases,
Garrett Leon then drove in a pair with a single to left, making it a one-run game.
Sophomore
Vinnie Fayard, who hit four home runs in Thursday's big comeback including a walk-off three-run home run with the same two guys on base, then stepped to the plate. But it turned out he wouldn't even get a chance to repeat his walk-off as Farrington was caught too far off second and picked off to end the game.
Biola led by two early in the game thanks to a pair of solo home runs. The first came in the top of the third as senior catcher
Daniel Bodemer led off with a solo shot. It was his second homer in as many games and fourth extra-base hit in six at bats.
Sophomore first-baseman
Mac Sullivan made it a 2-0 game in the fourth, drilling a long home run to right field.
But Point Loma responded in a big way, putting up six runs in the bottom of the fourth. The Sea Lions sent 11 men to the plate as the first six batters reached base. Steven Winnick and Rashad Taylor led off the inning with back-to-back doubles followed by a single from Wes Kartch. After an RBI-fielders choice failed to record an out, Point Loma continued the hit parade with RBI-singles by Kevin Newberg and Jack Diamond.
Alex Cameron capped the inning with a two-run double after Biola manged to get the first two outs of the frame.
That would be the final inning for Biola starter
Dale Harder, who had allowed just one hit entering the inning. Harder, who drops to 0-1 on the year, allowed six runs on seven hits over four innings, striking out four but walking two.
Meanwhile, Point Loma Nazarene starter Chad Blauer was cruising. He allowed just the two solo home runs and scattered six hits over eight innings, striking out eight and not walking a batter to improve to 3-0.
The game was part of a make-up for a rained-out doubleheader scheduled for Saturday. The other game will be made up at a future time.
Biola resumes GSAC play this week with a four-game series against arch-rival Azusa Pacific University. The Eagles open with games at APU on Wednesday and Thursday, then welcome the Cougars to La Mirada for a doubleheader on Saturday. The weekday games begin at 2:00 p.m. with Saturday's game starting at 11:00 a.m.
