Biola Splits Twinbill With No. 21 Madonna

Eagles cruise in opener, fall in extra innings in game two

Mike Frisina

LA MIRADA, Calif. --- Biola received a strong pitching performance from senior Mike Frisina to win the first game of Friday's doubleheader 7-1, but fell 7-6 in extra innings in the nightcap against No. 21 Madonna University (Mich.) in a pair of non-conference games on Eagles Diamond.

The Eagles move to 6-1 at the end of the day, suffering their first loss of the season while the Crusaders move to 2-1 overall.

Frisina was nearly unhittable in game one, scattering six hits over seven shutout innings to pick up his first victory of the season. He threw just 88 pitches over those seven innings and got into trouble in just two of those innings.

Biola's offense backed him up with seven runs including five via the long ball. The Eagles got going early with a run in the bottom of the first inning as Boone Farrington led off the game with a double and would later come around to score on an RBI-ground out by Vinnie Fayard.

Biola tacked on three more in the third with Fayard belting a solo shot to left field and Brent Opdyke adding a two-run shot later in the inning to extend the lead to 4-0.

With two out in the fourth, the Eagles would again benefit from a home run, this one off the bat of Garrett Leon, making it a 6-0 game.

Biola would add one final run in the eighth as Trever Blood singled to open the inning and would eventually come around to score on a wild pitch.

The Crusaders scored their lone run in the top of the ninth inning, but it proved to be too little, too late.

In the second game, Madonna was the one to benefit from the long balls and also took advantage of three Biola errors to salvage the split.

The Crusaders opened the scoring with a run in the first inning as Zach Flavin collected the first of four hits in the game, driving home a run to get things going. With two outs in the second, Madonna added an unearned run as Billy Hardin reached via a two-out error and scored on a single two batters later.

Biola got a run back in the bottom of the second on an RBI-groundout by catcher Mike Lopez after Phil Blazek led off the frame with a double.

Madonna scored another run in the third, again taking advantage of a Biola error, but could get just the one run despite putting runners are second and third with no one out.

It looked like Biola would take control in the bottom of the third as the first four Biola batters reached with singles. But with one run already in, the bases loaded and the 4-5-6 hitters coming up with no one out, the Eagles could not manage any more runs. A popout, a strikeout and another pop out ended the threat and Biola still trailed 3-2 after three.

Neither team could push across a run in the fourth or fifth innings, but not because of a lack of opportunities. Madonna left the bases loaded in the fourth and two in scoring position in the fifth while the Eagles saw a double-play erase a rally in their half of the fourth and stranded two in the fifth.

Madonna finally got a big, clutch hit in the top of the sixth inning to break the game open. With two on and one out, Ted Toune drove a three-run home run to dead centerfield to put the Crusaders up 6-2.

But Biola answered back with a pair of runs in the bottom of the inning with three-straight, one-out singles followed by an RBI groundout. The Eagles then tied the game with two out in the final inning of the seven-inning game. After a single, an error and a fly out put runners on the corners with one out, Blood drove home the first run with a single to right and advanced to second on an attempted throw out at third.

The Eagles tied the game with two out as Opdyke hit a twisting foul ball just behind third base which was hauled in by a great effort by Dale Hardin. However, after sliding to make the catch, he was unable to get up and throw out Fayard, who wisely tagged up and scored on the play.

In the extra frame, the Eagles sent Alex Brueske to the hill and he made quick work of the first two batters with a lineout to right and a strikeout. However, Flavin took a 1-1 fastball and drove it well over the left field fence to give Maddona the lead right back at 7-6.

Madonna's Andy Omilian, who had been pitching since the sixth, allowed a two out single in the bottom of the eighth, but got an easy flyout to left to end the game. He picked up the win despite blowing the save attempt in the seventh.

Dale Harder struggled in his first start with the Eagles, allowing three runs on six hits over 3-1/3 innings. He did not suffer the loss though, as that went to Brueske, his first of the year.

Biola opens GSAC play next, hosting No. 2 Point Loma Nazarene in the first two games of a four-game series. The teams battle in La Mirada on Wednesday and Thursday before concluding the series in San Diego with a doubleheader on Saturday.
