Biola Improves to 7-0 With 63-55 Victory at Cal Baptist

RIVERSIDE, Calif. --- Senior Curtis Eatmon scored a season-high 15 points to help Biola remain perfect with an 63-55 win over California Baptist University in a GSAC road contest on Saturday night at Van Dyne Gymnasium.

The Eagles improve to 7-0 and remain atop the conference standings with a 2-0 record. The Lancers drop to 5-3 and to 0-2 in the conference.

Eatmon was one of three Eagles to reach double-figures. Dwight Gordon added 13 points while Josh Miller poured in 10.

Biola's dominate defense continued to shine, holding Cal Baptist to just 55 points and 37 percent shooting.

The Eagles got off to a strong start, jumping out to a 12-4 lead as Eatmon and Rakestraw scoring five points each. Biola would stretch that lead to 12 on a pair of Eatmon free throws to go up 22-10 with 8:09 to go in the first half. The Eagles had a 15-point edge with 1:55 to play in the period but led by just 10 at 36-26 at the half.

In the second half, the Lancers would pull within four on a layup by Luke Evans with 12:48 but Biola would respond with a pair of layups by Andrew Schroeder and a three-point by Rakestraw. to go back on top at 50-40 at the 11:00 mark.

The Lancers would make things interesting late using a quick 8-0 run to make it a 58-51 game with just over two minutes to play. Biola came back down and got a Josh Miller jumper to go back up by nine and the Eagles held on the rest of the way.

Biola returns to the court on Tuesday for a huge GSAC showdown, traveling to Azsua to face the top-ranked and arch-rival Azusa Pacific Cougars. The Cougars suffered their first lost in conference on Saturday night, falling on a last-second basketball at defending GSAC-Champion Concordia University. Tuesday's game begins at 7:30 p.m. at the Felix Events Center.
