LA MIRADA, Calif. — Biola University Head Men's Basketball Coach Dave Holmquist is nearing a major coaching milestone, entering the final week of 2010 with 799 coaching victories, one shy of becoming just the 16th men's basketball coach to record 800 career victories.
Holmquist's first shot at the milestone comes on Wednesday night as the Eagles host University of the Fraser Valley in a 7:30 p.m. game at Chase Gymnasium on the Biola University campus.
Biola (11-1 overall) is currently ranked No. 16 in the NAIA National Poll and picked up a 65-50 victory over the University of Victoria on Tuesday night to move Holmquist up to 799 career coaching wins. The Eagles sit in a tie for second in the Golden State Athletic Conference at 3-1.
Holmquist is in his 34th year of coaching and 31st season at Biola, where he graduated in 1974. He has a career record of 799-295 which includes a record of 763-253 at Biola. With the 800th victory, Holmquist will join a short list of coaching greats which includes Bobby Knight (902 wins), Mike Krzyzewski (879), Dean Smith (879), Jim Boeheim (843), and Jim Calhoun (833). Earlier this year, Larry Holley of the NAIA's William Jewel College became the latest addition to the club and currently has 809 victories.
Fans unable to make it out to celebrate the accomplishment are encouraged to join with the Biola Community to celebrate "Dave Holmquist Day" which will take place on Saturday, January 29 after the game against California Baptist University at 7:30 p.m.
