Amy Atkinson has been named an ESPN Academic All-District 8 selection on Tuesday, earning the honor for the second-straight season.
Atkinson, from Mongmong, Guam, was recognized for her performance on the field as well in the classroom. In addition to being a key member of Biola's impressive defensive back line, Atkinson, a team co-captain, carries a 3.97 GPA in Liberal Studies. Her emphasis is in elementary education with a concentration in English. After graduation, Atkinson in planing on pursuing a multi-subject and secondary English teaching credentials.
Atkinson has been named to the Dean's List in each of her six semesters at Biola and has earned a four-year member of the Biola Athletic Ministry. In addition, she has earned the SURGE multicultural scholarship aand the Guam Sheih Scholar-Athlete Award winner.
On the pitch, Atkinson recently wrapped up her Biola career with impressive numbers including leaving the program as the all-time leader in minutes played, accumulating 4,788 minutes played in four seasons. She did not miss a match over the last three years and tallied three goals in the last three seasons.
Atkinson anchored the back line which surrendered just 17 goals in as many matches, allowing two or more goals three times.
To be nominated for all-district consideration, a student-athlete must be a starter or important reserve with at least a 3.30 cumulative grade point average (on a 4.0 scale) for her career. No athlete is eligible until he has reached sophomore athletic and academic standing. District 8 college division covers all NCAA Division II, Division III and NAIA schools in Alaska, Arizona, California, Hawaii, Idaho, Nevada, Oregon, Utah, Washington and British Columbia.
As a member of the district's first-team, Atkinson is now eligible to earn Academic All-America honors. Just four Biola athletes have ever earned CoSIDA Academic All-American honors, the last was volleyball's Kelsey Christoferon in 2009. The 2010 Women's Soccer Academic All-American team is scheduled to be announced on Tuesday, Nov. 16.
