LA MIRADA, Calif. --- Senior
Dwight Gordon led five Biola players in double-figures as the Eagles crushed Whittier College 78-35 in a non-conference game on Tuesday night at Chase Gymnasium.
Biola remains the lone perfect team in the Golden State Athletic Conference with a 5-0 record while the Poets fall to 1-1.
Gordon paced the Eagles' attack with 14 points and was one of five players to reach double-figures.
Nate Rakestraw added 12 points while
Curtis Eatmon contributed 11. Rounding out the group was
David Cline and
Josh Miller, each pouring in 10 points.
The Eagles seemed to be clicking on all cylinders, hitting 51.7 percent from the field and dominating in the paint. Biola outscored the Poets 34-16 in the paint and held a 47-27 edge on the boards including a 14-6 edge on the offensive glass.
The Eagles got going early in the contest, jumping out to a quick 12-5 lead and expanding it to 22-10 just a few minutes later. Whittier cut the lead to nine at 24-15 with 6:46 left in the half, but a 12-0 run by Biola gave the home side a 36-15 just before the half.
In the second half, Biola quickly stretched the lead to 24 just four minutes into the period and never let up, leading by as many as 45 late in the game.
The Eagles, who ranked No. 6 in the NAIA in scoring defense, allowed the fewest points of the season thus far and held Whittier to just 25 percent shooting from the field.
Biola returns to action on Tuesday, Nov. 30, hosting Westmont College in its GSAC opener at Chase Gymnasium. Tip-off is slated for 7:30 p.m.
