LA MIRADA, Calif. --- The 2010 NAIA Volleyball National Championship pools and schedules have been set and No. 7 Biola will face a challenging pool assignment which includes GSAC foe No. 6 California Baptist, No. 20 Lindenwood University (Mo.) and No. 21 Bellevue University (Neb.).
The 31st annual championship takes place at the Tyson Events Center in Sioux City, Iowa, November 30 - December 4. The tournament opens with pool play Nov. 30 - Dec. 2 with bracket play following for the top two teams from each pool on Dec. 3 and 4.
The Eagles wrapped up the No. 7 seed in the tournament with a second-place finish in the Golden State Athletic Conference and finished the season with a 25-8 record. Biola has been placed in Pool F with a number of tough teams.
Biola opens the tournament on Tuesday, Nov. 30, taking on Lindenwood. On Wednesday, the Eagles face Belleuve and wrap up pool play against California Baptist on Thursday. All three matches will begin at 3:15 p.m. Central Time. (1:15 p.m. PST)
The Eagles are making their 10th appearance in the NAIA tournament and are 35-18 overall in their previous nine trips, having reached the NAIA Quarterfinals in eight of those nine appearances.
The top seed in Biola's pool is a familiar face in GSAC rival California Baptist University. The Lancers, who finished tied with the Eagles for second in the GSAC, wrapped up the regular season with a 29-5 record. CBU is making its 14th appearance and has a 48-18 mark at the championships. The Lancers have won two titles in the program's history, winning back-to-back in 2004 and 2005.
Another familiar face in the Eagles' pool is Bellevue (Neb.). The Bruins faced Biola in their first match of the season at the Northwestern College tournament in early September. The Eagles easily won 25-19, 25-13, 25-18. Bellevue, the champions of the Midlands Collegiate Athletic Conference, defeated St. Xavier (Ill.) in an opening round match on Nov. 20 to improve to 34-11 on the season. The Bruins are making their fifth NAIA Tournament appearance and their fourth-straight, holding an overall record of 8-10.
Biola's final Pool F opponent is an unfamiliar opponent in Lindenwood (Mo.). The Lions cruised to an easy opening round win over Freed-Hardeman (Tenn.) to advance to the final 24. Lindenwood, which enters the tournament with a 34-12 overall record, clinched its third NAIA Tournament berth by winning the Heart of America Athletic Conference title. The Lions have reached the tournament in three of the last four seasons but is just 4-4 overall.
Biola is one of six GSAC teams to make the NAIA National Championship tournament field. Conference champ Fresno Pacific is the No. 3 seed overall. Azusa Pacific earned the No. 8 seed while Concordia finished as the No. 11 seed. Point Loma Nazarene had to win an opening round match to advance and was placed in Pool D.
