Biola's Season Comes to an End in 3-1 Loss At No. 9 California Baptist

Sam David

RIVERSIDE, Calif. --- Biola's first trip to the playoffs and solid season came to an end on Tuesday in a 3-1 loss to No. 9 California Baptist University in the GSAC Quarterfinals.

The Eagles, who suffered their first loss since October 9, end the season with a 6-5-6 overall record. The Lancers, the No. 3 seed in the GSAC tournament, improve to 13-4-1 and advance to the semifinals to face the No. 2 seed, The Master's College.

Cal Baptist got off to a fast start in the match, scoring two goals five minutes apart in the first half. After dominating play through the first 25 minutes, the Lancers finally broke through with a goal in the 28th minute. Bernadette Witz scored the first of her two goals in the match, quickly finishing to the far post off a corner kick.

Witz was at it again just five minutes later, dribbling around three defenders before blasting a ball into the net from 20 yards out.

Biola had just one shot on goal in the first half and it came just seconds after the Lancers' second goal. Freshman Jessica Austin received a long through ball off the restart and broke past the defense for a one-on-one chance with the CBU keeper. Austin fired a quick ball toward the far post, but it was saved by the Lancer netminder.

In the second half, Cal Baptist kept up the pressure but was unable to get another goal. With around 20 minutes remaining, Biola stepped up the pressure and had a number of chances to score, putting five shots on frame. However, the Eagles could not find the back of the net either.

In the closing minutes, Ashley Richardson added a third goal for the Lancers, hammering it high to the near post off a counter attack.

The Eagles got their lone tally of the contest 30 seconds later, just coming off the restart. Senior Sam David recorded her first goal of the season with a quick finish just inside the box to close the gap back to two.

Biola would make a frantic attempt in the final minutes but could not muster the offense in the final minute.

The Eagles were outshot 17-8 in the contest, but had six of those shot in the second half. Both keepers made five saves.

Biola, which was in its first playoff game since the 2005 season, wraps up the year with an impressive 6-5-6 overall record. The Eagles played in a total of 10 overtime contests this season, tops in the NAIA, and set a school record with six ties including four-straight.
