AZUSA, Calif. --- Azusa Pacific scored early and, despite a late rally by Biola, held on for a 3-1 victory in a GSAC match on Suturday on the Cougar Soccer Field in Azusa.
The Eagles suffered their second-straight setback, falling to 4-4-2 on the season and dropping to 1-2-1 in GSAC play. The Cougars, ranked No. 2 in the latest NAIA National Poll, improve to 9-0-2 overall and to 4-0-1 in the conference.
Azusa Pacific picked up a goal early in the contest as Brittany Flanagan netted a goal just eight minutes into the contest.
Biola fought off chance after chance throughout much of the rest of the game until the Cougars found the back of the net again. Laura Feehs chipped a shot over the keeper from 15 yards out to put APU up 2-0.
The Eagles mounted an impressive attack over the next few minutes, culminating in a penalty kick opportunity just four minutes later. Senior
Caitlin Peterson stepped into the spot kick and scored to pull Biola back within one.
However, the Cougars answered back four minutes later. As a Biola defender was attempting to clear the ball, it ricocheted off Feehs and into the goal to make it a 3-1 game.
The three goals allowed by the Eagles were the most in a single game this year and the first time the normally stout Biola defense surrendered more than one goal in a match. The loss also snapped a four-match unbeaten streak against ranked opponents.
Biola hopes to right the ship on Tuesday, traveling to Fullerton to take on Hope International University at 3:00 p.m. The game will be played at Cal State Fullerton.
