RIVERSIDE, Calif. --- For the second time in the last three days, Biola suffered a four-set loss to one of the NAIA's top teams, this time falling 25-15, 18-25, 25-18, 26-24 to No. 6 California Baptist in a GSAC showdown at Van Dyne Gymnasium in Riverside.
The Eagles, ranked No. 3 in the latest NAIA national ranking, drop to 22-7 on the season and to 13-3 in conference play. The Lancers move into a two-way tie for second with Biola at 13-3 and improve to 26-4 overall.
Sophomore
Nicolette Mather recorded 16 kills to pave Biola's attack while senior
Tavea Hampton added 11 kills and four blocks. However, the Lancers received a big match from Ingrid Camona, who had 23 kills and added 16 digs.
The Eagles got off to a poor start in the first set, falling behind 9-3 early on. Biola was able to close the gap to 12-9 only to see Cal Baptist rattle off seven-straight points to go up 19-9 and never looked back.
In the second, Biola came alive, getting the jump on the Lancers with an 11-4 run to start the second set and led by as many as 12 at 24-12 thanks to back-to-back aces by
Lindsay Dietzen. Cal Baptist rattled off six-straight points to narrow the gap a bit, but ran out of steam as the Eagles ended the set with a block by Hampton and
Kim Russell to even the match at 1-1.
The Lancers went back on top with a strong third set, again jumping out to a big lead with an 11-5 run. Biola attempted to close the gap with a run midway through the set, narrowing the gap to 13-10 with some strong play by Russell. But it was CBU answering right back with an 11-5 run and closed it out with relative ease late.
The fourth set went back and forth through the first half before Cal Baptist took a 13-10 lead with a short run. Biola came right back with a long 8-1 run to take a commanding 18-14 lead. After exchanging points, the Eagles used a block by
Rachel Buckley and
Amy Mosebar to take a 23-19 edge and appeared to be ready to force a fifth set.
But the Lancers had other ideas in mind, taking advantage of five-straight attack errors by the Eagles to go up 24-23. Biola tied the score with a kill by Mosebar, but kills by Bree Rauschenbach and Linjun Ji gave the match to the Lancers.
Biola returns to action on Thursday (Nov. 4), traveling to face Vanguard University in a GSAC battle at 7:00 p.m. in Costa Mesa.
