Eagles End Road Woes With 1-0 Victory at Vanguard

Jessica Austin

COSTA MESA, Calif. --- Breaking its own record set earlier in the season, Biola scored 21 seconds into the second overtime to snap an 18-match road winless streak with a 1-0 victory at Vanguard University in a GSAC match on Wednesday night.

The Eagles improve to 5-4-6 on the year and 2-2-5 in GSAC play. The win propels Biola into seventh place in the conference and secures the team's first playoff appearance since the 2005 season. The Lions drop to 8-6-3 and 2-5-2 in the conference.

"It was a huge win for us, espeically with the playoffs on the line," said Biola Head Coach Todd Elkins. "We had one of our worst performances of the year in the first half, but fought back and kept getting better. We felt like it was just a matter of time before we put one in."

Biola's goal came just 21 seconds into overtime off a great individual effort by freshman Jessica Austin. After along clearance, Austin battle her defender for the header, won it, then beat the defender with a great move to set up a one-on-one break. She then slid a quick shot past the keeper to end the match.

The quick overtime goal broke the record set by Taylor Lundquist earlier this season, when she sent home the OT-winner to upset California Baptist 22 seconds into extra time.

Biola got off to an awful start, playing what Coach Elkins referred to as one of the team's worst halves all season. The Eagles were out-shot 9-1 in the opening period, but were able to keep the score level to the half.

After the break, Biola came out with renewed energy and continued to get better throughout. The Lions still held a 6-2 shot advantage, but Biola was creating more noise on the Vanguard end. As overtime began, the Eagles began to dominate, taking a pair of great shots in overtime, both of which just missed the net.

But the game quickly came to an end at the start of the second overtime period with Austin's goal.

The victory was the first road win for the Eagles since the 2008 season, when they also defeated Vanguard in double overtime. Since that victory, Biola had been 0-10-8 in road contests.

The overtime match was the 10th overtime contest of the season for the Eagles, who have played just five that have ended in regulation, though the last one came nearly three weeks ago.

Junior goalkeeper Erin Frushon recorded four saves to earn her fourth shutout of the season.

Biola closes out the regular season on Saturday (Oct. 30), hosting No. 4 The Master's College in a 4:30 p.m. match at Al Barbour Field. The Eagles will honor their seniors in a ceremony prior to kick-off.
