No. 3 Biola Cruises to Sweep Over No. 8 Azusa Pacific

Kim Russell

LA MIRADA, Calif. --- In an outcome no one could have predicted, No. 3 Biola had little trouble dispatching of arch-rival and No. 8-ranked Azusa Pacific on Tuesday, winning 25-21, 25-17, 25-21 in a GSAC match in front of 1,042 fans at Chase Gymnasium.

The Eagles pick up their second-straight victory and improve to 22-5 on the season, 13-2 in GSAC play. The Cougars saw their five-match winning-streak snapped, fall to 23-5, 10-6 in the conference.

The sweep was an unexpected delight for Biola, which always seems to be up for the match of the season when facing Azusa Pacific. The Cougars put forth an impressive effort in a hard-fought, four-set loss to the Eagles earlier this year and had not been swept yet in 2010.

The victory also gives Biola a season sweep of Azusa Pacific, its third in the last four seasons.

However, junior Kim Russell's 14 kills and .444 attack percentage paced a relentless Eagle attack which never allowed the Cougars much to work with. Senior Amy Mosebar also had an impressive night with 10 kills and no errors in 16 attacks for a season-best .625 hitting percentage.

Biola started strong and never let up, trailing only for a short time in the third set to the Cougars. In the first set, the Eagles raced to a quick 5-0 lead as Russell opened the match with a kill, followed by three-straight APU errors and another kill by Russell. Biola stretched the lead to 7-1 after an ace by Russell before a brief run would see the Cougars pull to within one at 8-7.

But the Eagles slowly began to pull away, scoring two points for every one APU point and steadily built a 20-14 lead. The Cougars chipped away a bit before a block by Mosebar and fellow senior Tavea Hampton ended the set with Biola winning 25-21.

In the second, the Eagles again raced out to a big lead, opening with four-straight points and holding a 7-2 lead before too long. Biola kept the foot on the gas and stretch the advantage to eight at 15-7. The teams would exchange points the rest of the way with the Eagles cruising to an easy 25-17 lead.

Azusa Pacific finally mounted a charge and broke a 7-7 tie with a 4-1 run to take its largest lead of the night at 11-8. But the Eagles quickly rallied to tie the score at 12-12 just a few moments later and took back the advantage after an attack error by APU and kill by Russell. With the score tied a 15-15 a few points later, Biola slowly pulled away, steadily outscoring the Cougars down the stretch and winning the set on a great dump kill by setter Abbie Wright.

Russell's great night came thanks in large part to a spectacular second set, where she had seven kills in eight swings with no errors. She also had two aces and two blocks to round out the evening. It was the second time this year Russell led Biola with 14 kills against Azusa Pacific, doing the honors in the four-set win at APU earlier in the season.

Mosebar finished the first two sets with seven kills in eight swings and no errors, then went five for 13 in the third set, still with no errors.

Hampton recorded seven kills and add four blocks while sophomore Nicolette Mather continued her red-hot play as of late with nine kills, three assists and a .421 attack percentage.

Whittany Radcliffe paced the Cougars with 14 kills and three blocks and was the only APU player with more than five kills.

With a win under it's belt, Biola continues its formidable week against a trio of NAIA Top-10 teams on Thursday, hosting No. 5 University of Texas-Brownsville in a non-conference clash at 7:00 p.m. The week ends with a trip to No. 6 California Baptist University on Saturday.
